Popularity of FOWLR

Why are agressive and FO tanks so unpopular. Are corals really that unresistable. I personaly find the agresive fish to have far mor eintresting personalitys.

for me an agressive tank has to be a good size. i have 150 gals and i find it to be way to small. but for now it will do. but my reeftank is only 45gals, and that's plenty. i think that this is the biggest reason. you can keep a small reef tank and it still be intersting. so it's easier to get a small reef tank going than a large FO tank(cost).

Im a fishonly guy w/ some corals for color --its cuz this is reefcentral and not fishonlycentral

we're just on the wrong site --only other one I know is grimreefers but it doesnt get much traffic

fishonly aggressive are a pain for me cuz the fish get so big you need a large tank ($), they are hard to train to eat, they eat your cleanup crew, if I could I'd set up 2 tanks one community and one panther grouper, lionfish tank

My nanofish [in with my corals] are full of attitude. The fact that they would not collectively fill a teacup is beside the point---they're species that ordinarily duck and cover when the big guys are around, [not being stupid], but by themselves, and the largest things in their universe, they're full of it.
My corals are full of changes, particularly the lps, which have a daylight and a dark personality. But watching sps grow has its charms, rather like raising cactus. You don't realize it has grown, until you think back a month. ;) I find it zen-i-fying, when the rest of my life gets just too exciting for sanity.

My brain gets very excited by color. So I have a reef instead of FO or aggressive b/c reefs have much more color.

Yea i expected more of a defensive for FO tanks on this particular form but purhaps this anwsers my question. Reefs are def pefered. I have noticed that most people with agressive tanks also have a reef.

I have a 90g reef and a 75g agressive. I am soon to be getting 2 eels for the 75g, a golden tail moray and a white eyed moray. I love eels enough to throw one in my 90g reef, a snowflake moray. Eels have so much personality! If the I couldn't have an eel in my reef tank I probably wouldn't have any corals . Having coral with my fish is just a bonus heh. JMO of corse.

with a fish only tank you are done (mostly) once the fish are in, it is hard to keep adding more and more. But with a reef you can always tinker and add and swap and trade and move stuff around - at least for me that is the best part of a reef - always ongoing.

big fish keepers generally consider them pets - but reefkeepers are more like, ummm... gardeners?!?! :D

I think it's the same as why you don't keep a freshwater tank. Saltwater is a step up from freshwater and reefs are the next step up from that. Fish are easier to keep than corals. Does your Huma care what your calcium level is?

Many people do startwith FO or FOWRL tanks when they first get into saltwater and move to reefs. Reefs just happen to be the end of the line so that's where people end up. But most of them actually started in the aquarium hobby with a freshwater tank....

I ended up with a reef but went back to a FO.

They actually are very popular!, this happens to be a "reef" oriented message board. Just a matter of personal taste. Done 'em both, love seeing large angels, tangs, eels in my living room instead of corals.

Who said that they weren't popular?

When I go to the LFS, I tend to see as many non reef-safe fish as reef fish.

You are on "Reefcentral.com". I've heard that reef tanks aren't that popular over on "FishOnlyCentral.com". ;)

I personally like reef tanks because of the variety of life in them. When I think about it, I don't even like half of the types of coral out there, but I find it interesting to keep such a community together. That being said, I have no objection to tanks that are designed for non-reef fish if those fish are unusual or interesting. A tank of triggers or butterflies and stuff all mixed together just doesn't interest me much.
