Porcelain (anemone) crab

Wanted to share this picture of the procelain crab that I got last December at Dawn's house. I've tried several times to get a good picture, and finally caught that fine webbing spread. The crab loves to sit on the porites coral. Occasionally it will climb the gorgonian a few inches to get a bit higher up. Really cute crab that seems to be an excellent reef citizen.

How long have the Christmas Tree worms been in your system? I was under the impression that they don't last very long in captive systems, but yours look excellent.

The Christmas Tree worms were purchased in June, 2004. They failed to thrive in my big tank, so I eventually moved them to the smaller tank, where they are doing very well and growing again. I have found that filter-feeding type animals thrive in the smaller tank much better than the large one. The water flow is more diffuse (it has a manifold), it tends to be a bit more overfed-- not sure, really, what all the factors are, I just know that the small tank is where these tricky things do well. A few months ago I bought a hard tube worm for the large tank. It had two heads when I bought it. A month later, one head was gone. I moved it to the small tank, and now the 2nd head is regrowing. I wish I had a better handle on WHY these differences occur so I could be sure that my next tank (planning a 180) will work as well as this little one does.

Very impressive.

Perhaps it's easier to saturate the watercolumn with the necessary foodstuffs in the smaller tank. You must be doing something right to handle the excessive nutrients. I'd be interested to see your tank in action sometime.

"filterfeeder heaven". Has a nice ring to it.

Rob,
I'd be delighted to have you visit. With your experience, you may be able to tell what is making this tank work. I do use mud in the refugium, but I use mud in the big tank's refugium also. It's not too long a drive to Norridgewock, if you have the time someday.
