Porcupine puffer

Ok so I have been looking for a porcupine puffer for a while n doin a little research. One shows up at the lfs and obviously has some ick! A lot of people say they basically keep it and show it when they are stressed. Is this true? Is there a way to battle the ick?

Read the stickies at the top of this section. I like to use cupramine but learn about what way you want to use to eradicate the ich in your tank.

I have heard I can't use copper on a puffer? I know there are copperless alternatives but I have also read where they do not kill the ick. Anybody have any experience getting rid of ick on a PP?

"A lot of people" are wrong. Never buy a fish with ich, I'd never buy a fish from a store that is willing to sell one. There are very effective ways to eliminate ich and almost all long-term hobbyists don't tolerate it in their tanks. It probably ruins the hobby for more folks than any other factor---IMO. If buying a fish that you know is sick/parasite infested isn't the biggest mistake you can make; I don't know what is. BTW, if this is the mind-set of your LFS, I'd never go back.

Using Seachem Cupramine is fine, used on my puffers a few times. You would have to put him into a QT and not into the MT and treat. Also they better give to you for free or dirt cheap. I have a Spiny Box Puffer in qt for 3months.

Sure, ich can be cured on any fish; I just can't imagine bringing ich home intentionally. Any decent LFS would never sell this fish.

Agreed. Don't buy a fish that you know is sick.

You can use Cupramine on a puffer. I have done this on three puffers already and all ate just fine throughout the treatment.

Of course, read all of the ich stickies in this forum. You cannot successfully treat ich without knowing everything about it.
