Does the tank overflow because water can't get into the OF box fast enough or the drains can't keep up?

Water level in tank rises too high, water cannot get into the overflow fast enough.

This means for more flow you will have to remove teeth. This will also make it quieter.

Using the return flow from the latest pic:

Is the submerged siphon (unseen) valve fully open?

No, it is closed several turns on the gate valve.

If it's not, and you open it some does the siphon drain fast enough to pull air?

Yes, if I open it 1/32th of a turn (a tiny bit) the level in the tank and overflow drop. This causes the waterfall noise in the overflow as the water rushing in is now dropping and splashing. Another tiny turn and it will begin to pull air.

If you raise the siphon up some there would be less splashing. Also if you put a cover on the OF, you won't be able to hear it as much. Bonus is less crapus will grow down there and fish can't jump in! :)

What does the top of the siphon look like? Is it just an open stand pipe or is it topped with 1 or 2 elbows?

Top of siphon has a strainer but is otherwise pointed straight up.

If you make a 'U' out of two elbows or street ells, there will be less chance of sucking air.

The drain (emergency?) I can see looks a lot more like a Durso drain. I thought typical Herbie e-drain was just a stand pipe.

I think you are correct. I did not know the names of the different styles. It is a T capped above the waterline. The top of the cap as a (John Guest) airline looped back to be under the waterline if it raises too high. Other branch of T has a 90 that is currently turned up.

If you take all that off and just have a simple, dry emergency, I think it would be easier to deal with. There is no need for it or any valve on the e-drain. You want it to stay dry so stuff (technical term!) doesn't grow to block it and snails are less prone to go there.

Can you add a 90/180 downturn on the full siphon to stop it from creating a vortex from the surface and pull the water from the bottom of the overflow?

I cut off the teeth on the sides of the weir today. Kind of ugly with a dremmel but effective. I got the flow level turned up higher and the noise all but eliminated. I will still switch to a straight up emergency I think and at least try the down turned U. At least for now it is working.

I think I would have to remove the teeth on the front pane of the overflow to get to full speed on the pump. I dont want to do that as my cut was not straight enough to be visible at all times. the ones on the side a difficult to see.

No guts, no glory! :lol2:

Good for you. Glad it improved both flow and sound.

Thank you to woodaquanut and worm5406 for taking the time to help me figure this out.

Picked up a few frags over the weekend. Now the fun part begins.

Begins? Does it end??

I have a new 265 I need moving/installing. I would love to use your engine lifts to help facilitate it.

If you do go that route, be very careful with the straps, I got a small scratch in the plastic trim. Also, make sure you only lift across areas that are cross braced. I would likely build something to go under the tank that extends past the sides then attach the straps to that, if I was to do it again. You will still need to be able to manually lift one end to remove the straps from the other.

I am preparing the sump and frag tank area now that the tank seems to be maintaining its level. I will be adding a water station, the 100 gal refugium, and a frag tank 24x24x12. I will also have to add an additional tank for sump volume (or swap to a larger sump) as the current set up puts the water level right at the top of the sump on power off.

Its not sexy yet but I should keep my current livestock happy.

Trying to figure out how to embed videos. Thinking You Tube may be better.

Thanks worm5406. Can you tell me or point me to a tutorial on how to do that in the future?

When you watch your video there is a item that says SHARE.

From there there is an items that says EMBED.

Copy and paste the embed link in your message.

Thanks for the plumbing lesson guys.
Poriferan, good luck on the new system! Love the figure out how to move it yourself attitude, same type of methods I employ! The neighbors may think I'm crazy, but I get tasks done by myself!

Thanks for stopping by :D I still have some bugs to work out on the plumbing. I began running the refugium and frag tank. That throws everything out of wack and started a new set of stresses. I will be adding emergency drains to both tanks and attaching an additional tank to handle the extra power off voulme the sump must handle. Pics to follow.
