Parts Per Thousand.

When you look thru the eye piece do you see:

Range: 0 - 100 parts per thousand salinity and 1.000-1.070 specific gravity.

Just get a clean dropper, flip the lid up and add a couple of drops on the prism. Close the lid and take the refractometer to a good light source. I flip open my canopy and hold it close to my MH.

Look into the eye piece and read the specific gravity. Natural sea water (NSW) is 1.025 +- (depending on where you are in the world in can vary).

Yea that what i see.. so my saltwater should be like 1.020 then??

Calibrate it before you use it to test your tank's water. Warm some RO water to the tank's temperture and read its salinity. Adjust the screw on top to calibrate the reading to 1.000. Then you are ready to test your tank's water. You only have to calibrate it every so often.

They come calibrated. You have to be sure of the TDS, I believe, before you have ro you can use to calibrate. I'm not well-informed on that, but I know I messed mine up that way and had to take it to the lfs to calibrate.

I got mine on ebay too. Yes there in no manual with it, but knowing the range to be then it's not that complicate to use. However yours may have the problem of re-calibrate each time you use it as some pm me to ask if I have the same problem. If so you can un assembly the unit and use a piece of soft plastic or spring to keep the screw from moving. I did it this way and no re-calibrate I ever have to do again.
good luck

I just got one a couple of weeks ago.

If you remove the foam inside the top, the manual should be behind it. I know it is a dumb place to put it.

At least that is where I found mine.
