Possible 12 ft tank ideas, input welcome

Just remeasured, make that 5ft minus 3.5" for the front wall... not much room to work, I'm thinking 24, maybe 30, 3' just won't allow room to move... Anyone care to chime in?

I guess I'd consider bumping the tank wall forward 3 or 4 ft and having the hallway end at the tank with a door on the left to the backroom and on the right (perhaps an open doorway) to the recroom. That would give room to make the tank as wide as you could possibly want. If the tank were only 10 or 11 feet long, would it make it any easier making it down the steps? Could a glass pane 10 ft X 3 ft (or even 10 X 4) make it? Having alot of depth can make up for a slightly shorter tank in volume and even in visual impact, IMO.

Allen, and 20 20, The only problem with expanding the room even more is the response I'll get from my wife. :) The Rec room is pretty small as it is, I don't want to chop it down to a bedroom sized room. Plus getting furniture in and out of the Guest room if I put in a hallway will be tough especially since there is duct work running there that will lower the ceiling dramtically. Where the wall is now is my only option. I was doing some stairway measurements, and if I remove part of the wall next to the stairs to open it up is should allow for a 12' piece of glass. The only question now is how wide... I can take the tank to the outside edge of the wall so I have exactly 60 inches to work with. Does everyone think 30" is enough room to walk and squat to work on a sump? If so I can do a 30" wide tank, that would put the size at 144x30x20 or about 375 gallons plus about another 125 gallons available in the sump so 500 gallons total. Good enough?

Not trying to be funny, but it depends on how big YOU are. 30" would be doable, but tight, IMO. If you're a 'large' person, that might not work, however. Twiggy? No problem!

LOL! I'm pretty small. :) I actually climbed through this stand at one point.

Yep that's a 23g FBH! I guess if I needed to I could just climb around under my new tank... Definately not preferred though.

Er, that pic in your avatar isn't you, by any chance, is it? :p

I have a peninsula tank, with 36" of working space behind it.

I'm 6'3", and wouldn't want to have only 30" ... would be workable, but I'd probably start to regret the tight fit a little.

On the otherhand, my tank is 30" wide, and if I had to cut back to 24" wide to get the extra 6" of working space, I'd choose the 30" tank every time. That extra 6" for aquascaping is unbelievable :p

i see your dilema with the width. What if you want with an 8 foot ro 10 foot tank and made it 24-30" wide... This would allow more cornering abilities of the shorter but wider glass.

Also, a wider tank is much much better. I would consider shortening it and widening it. You wouldn't lose much if any volume. An 8x4 or 10x3 would be your best bet i think.

but the 12 foot tank would look amazing.. just that 20" wide and 20" tall will throw off the image of it.

Going back to livestock talk, if you have the time to take proper care of them, a pair of Moorish Idols would look great swimming up and down the length of that tank.
