Possible 250g upgrade what do you think?

Hi all. I'm writing this to get your opinion on this tank. Currently I have a sumpless 10g mixed reef that has been up and running for 3 years with a kessil a350w light and an mp10w for flow. I've been wanting to upgrade to a much larger tank for awhile now being that my family has moved into a much bigger house. So here's the deal my co-worker told me yesterday his dad wants to get rid of his 250g tank with everything. Sump, lights, tank, stand, LR etc... He wasn't home yesterday but my co-worker took me by his house to take a look at it so I snapped a few pictures. And looked around a little. The tank is an AGA 250 with dual internal overflows. Right now it's a FOWLR and its in pretty bad shape (the contents of the tank) there is salt creep everywhere, the fish look in pretty bad shape and don't know if they would survive a move. The sumo looks like an aqueon wet/dry converted to a normal sump (won't be using this) Saw a skimmer but did not see a brand name and it wasn't on so don't know if it works. (I wouldn't want to use it anyways looks in bad shape). He has 5 power heads in the tank unknown brand. Coralife 4 bulb t5 fixture ( won't be using his either). And it looks like an aqueon black pine stand that's in rough shape also. (Stand is too low and would plan on using a 90 gallon tank I have sitting around for the sump so I would have to build the stand myself). Don't know any other info as I haven't talked to the actual owner of the tank so I don't know how much he's selling it for either. I just wanted to get some feed back on how much you would pay four this set up and help would be appreciated.

check the seams on the tank before doing anything, if the are pushed back from scraping I would avoid the tank. Talking from experience, 300 gallons on the floor is no fun. good luck.
 
Near the bottom of the tank on the front there are some scratches from algae scrubber. Didn't get a real good look at the glass because it's covered in algae. My co-worker said his dad was trying to get 1000-1500 for the entire setup. That is too high of a number in my opinion because most of what I saw seemed to be outdated or junk what do you guys think?
 
Depends on whether you are taking his live rock and fish - and what and how many fish that includes (reef safe?). I wouldn't go more than $300-400 for the tank alone. Even if it is in rough shape a glass tank can be restored (unlike an acrylic tank).

So really, what you are looking at is how much of the rest of the system you are willing to take off his hands (remember, you are doing HIM the favour ;)) and how much you and he agree it is worth.

Dave.M he has a few fish in there as well as a carpet anemone and some GSP (but no polyps are extended?). All fish are reef safe but not too sure if I would want the fish or the anemone. The anemone is almost completely white and the fish themselves are pretty rough (bites takin out of the fins). And they are super skittish. From what I was able to see he has 1 blue tang. 1 yellow tang. A puffer (not sure what kind) a few green chromis. A few Cardinal fish. As far as the live rock goes I'm not sure if I would use it, do you think it can be salvaged? With an acid wash? It's covered in algae as everything else is. In all reality I was going to offer him $500 for the setup just because of the amount of work that would go into the tank before water even goes back into it, and the amount of equipment that will probably not be used.
 
I'm not a dead rock fan and I can't really tell the condition without being there in person. What do your water tests tell you?

I think he is asking way too much. Basically you are getting a tank, Rock, Sand and Some livestock (if the livestock even stays alive). Think about the other costs your gonna need. Lights 1000, Sump 200, New stand 400, Skimmer 300, Return pump?, powerheads?, Etc....
 
Atomic081 that's what I was thinking exactly. I'm just gonna pass on it and not insult the guy by offering him almost 1k less than what he was shooting for. I appreciate all the help everyone.
 
I think $500 is ok - I'd ditch the stand & sand, see if someone will take the livestock, and cook the live rock.
