i am in the process of setting up my 30 gallon. 24x24x12 so the foot print is rather large and there is about 20 pounds of rock so it is also very open. this is a open top tank. i was thinking about a few blue reef chromis (Chromis cyaneus) maybe 3 or so, a orchid dotty back (Pseudochromis fridmani), a pair of z stripe clowns (a. bicincus).
here is where the list gets iffy. i would really like a sunburst or fathead anthias. would this be doable?

I was told a fathead would be fine in my 40 breeder. They're not as active as other anthias. Just take the extra care to get good food for them and to provide lots of hiding.

IMO 24" is a little too small for an anthias...... As for the dotty backs be wary as these guys can get super aggressive, I had one that I had to get rid of because he was attacking my other fish. They are very pretty though.

Would a set (2 females and a male) be totally out of the question?
Do you see a dotty back being an issue with any of the fish mentioned on my list?

If you are talking about a set of 2 female and 1 male anthias, I would say yes out of the question. If yo look at most of the retailers suggestions, they recommend at least 50-60 gallon tank for 1 and at least 125 gallons for more than 1. If you are talking about the chromis, you should be okay. Either way 6-7 fish in a 30 gallon may be pushing the limits IMHO.

As for the dotty back, you could try and add last, but every fish is unique you could get one that is okay or you could get one that is a total PITA. The clown can probably hold their own, not too sure on the chromis though.
