Possible to Just Use Retrofit Lights?

Could one just use a retrofit kit for lighting? I'm not entirely sure what separates it from a normal light, but it seem like it's just a normal light without a plastic enclosure and without the fan connected.

Yes it's possible. It's done frequently by people that have canopies above their tanks. I have found it to be more cost effective also.

The poster above me mentioned retrofit kit lighting is often used in conjunction with canopies, I was wondering whether a glass cover could work in place of the canopy? Or is a canopy unnecessary altogether?
