Possibly moving, looking for suggestions.

Zen through Reefkeeping
My girlfriend and I have been talking seriously about moving in with her mom to take care of her, since she's all the way down in Gettysburg and has ailing health. If we do this, I might sell the house, might rent it out, but at any rate, we won't be living here anymore. So.... I'm likely going to have to move my tank, all 180g of it. :eek1:

I've got quite an extensive stocklist, not to mention a DSB, about 300lbs of LR, and tons of coral. So I'm looking for suggestions (and yes, maybe asking for a little help, though beer/frags will be available for payment to anyone who might be interested). The move itself might not be for a couple months, but I want to plan extensively well in advance. My thoughts are to do it in one day by emptying the water into rubbermaid containers and/or buckets, with the rock/coral/fish in them. Scoop out the top 2" of sand and pitch the rest (DSB can't be moved so it will likely need to be removed), move all elements down, put it all back together. Not sure if there's anything I'm missing, but I'd likely have to have 2 32g trash cans down there all full with new water to put in, plus I'm thinking I'll have to get ready to do another one the following week. When I got the tank, it was difficult enough to get it in the house with 3 of us, so I'm thinking I'd need at least 6 people to move the thing.

So, any thoughts?

I'm at work so I can't really think too deep about it at the moment, but as long as I'm free I'd be more than happy to help with the physical labor portion. Sorry to hear about the situation prompting this, though :(

I'm always available. I have a 50G tote on wheels that I used to move rock, a few other 10G containers for liquid, battery air-pumps and a 4x6 trailer.

Top 2" is good, you are correct to ditch the rest. Best case scenario is really to get a new tank/stand and have it setup as well as you can prior to the move, otherwise I'd recommend splitting your crew into 2 or 3 shifts since you are going to be working for quite some time. Moving my 75 system took 3 people the better part of the day, and I only moved things to a temporary tank. I spent the next 5 months getting everything set back up to what it is now (the explosion in the spaghetti factory).

Yeah, if I manage to sell the house before moving down there I'll try to use some of the extra cash to do that, but it's not likely that will happen before the move.... and thanks too, that would definitely help a ton! I'll let everyone know when the time comes, but I'm going to aim for at least a month or two from now. :D

Hey Monk, sorry to hear about this. I will be more than willing to lend a hand, I as well have multible brute cans, buckets, water jugs, a P/U with an 8ft bed and 5x8 trailer. Oh and a generator if need be. I just need a little notice and I should be able to help! :-)

I just transfered my tank not to long ago, i ditched all my sand and started new. Im getting just alittle cycle not much at all. Make sure you make up enough water in case you need to add some extra or something happens. I agree its going to be a long day it took me from 9am till about 1am, but mostly because i was trying to get my rocks set just right.

My wife tends to fill up our 'calendar' with crap, so the sooner you could throw out a rough tentative date you're thinking, the better. I understand there's a whole lot of uncertainty around the situation, just wanna do the best I can to be available to help when the time comes.

Hey Alex, sorry to hear that you are moving. Gettysburg isn't too far away though. You know I am always willing to help out with whatever is needed, just holler when you know what is going to happen and when. I got trash cans and the van to haul stuff, my truck is out of commission at the moment and I may sell it soon, the tank would fit in the van if you need it.
Matt

I don't have anything to help transport stuff, but I'm more than willing to be there as an added pair of hands.

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate all the offers for help. I'll definitely be posting when the time comes to organize the actual move plan and will definitely be taking people up on their offers for equipment and physical help. :D It's going to be quite a process and I'm hoping to have at least a couple months to prepare. We're going down this weekend and will be talking everything out with her mom and I'll likely have something more concrete in mind next week.

One thing I usually have is time. Only have one 20 gal brute but I have a green 15 gal bucket I've used for pond emergencies -- the sort of thing you can get at a farm/feed supply store for not a lot of money.

Probably one of the best things you could do to prepare for the move would be to drill your rock and have it on rod before you do the move -- that would save you a lot of time putting the tank back together after you get the components down to Gettysburg. That, and rinse your new sand really really well. So you don't have a ton of cloudiness right of the bat that will **** off your corals and fish, as you are going to want to place them right away. If you are use to running a DSB, it may be time to do a RDSB, and not add any new sand to the display at all. Could you use some old sand in a RDSB?

Sorry, just some thoughts that came to mind immediately. Good luck this weekend.

So I've decided to tear the tank down, sell the livestock, keep the coral in my 29g with the light from my frag tank, and store the LR in a trash tub and store the tank for a while. I'm not sure if I'll set it back up down there, or just keep it for when we buy another house, but I'm going to just stick with the 29g for a while. I'll still likely need help moving the tank though, and anyone who helps will get free beer/frags when it's all done.

Also, since I'm going to sell off the livestock, I figured I'd see if anyone local wants any. Here's the list, let me know. Thanks!!

4-5" Blue Hippo Tang (had some HLLE early on, caused by hypo, and has some slight scarring around the eyes): $20
4-5" Sailfin Tang (had some HLLE early on, caused by hypo, and has some slight scarring around the eyes):$15
4-5" Yellow Tang: $20
3-4" Juvenile Orange Shoulder Tang: $35
3" Pink Wrasse (possibly rhomboid, pylie, or lineatus, not sure): $30
3" Super-Male Solensis Wrasse: $30 (Potentially sold, waiting on payment)
6 blue-green chromis: $15 for the group
Green Mandarin: $10

I'll take the blue hippo tang and the sailfin. PM me PayPal addy and I'll send payment. We can work out a pickup.

Also, if you still have them, I'll take the chromis too.

Still got them all. PM sent. Thanks!

Wasn't expecting such a quick hit on them, but that's good, will help me save money on water changes and food until the move.

hmm... what does "NBo" mean? Well I'm interested in the Chromis 6-pack if they're still available. :)
