I'd like to see what kind of good or bad experiences you've had.

Pictures are welcome!

I personally only have brackish figure 8 puffer experience which I'll post pictures of to start it out with what I can.

Was beak maintenance an issue for you ?

My puffer's right under my name. He's the fish that got me into the hobby. When I first got him (2 years ago), I was reeeeeeallly inexperienced. And considering puffers are ich magnets.... well, I've brought him back from near death twice now. He's incredibly resilient. He's a big sissy. Unfortunately, I really want to go with much more aggressive fish soon and I'll probably have to see him go to a good home. His beak's never been an issue-- he chews on the LR and I feed him clams on the half shell every other day.:twitch:

He's no mappa, but I still love him!

dog face puffers are my favorite. they stay fairly reasonable sized, usually don't harass other fish, and are mellower than most. they also are available in some beautiful, rarer color morphs (I especially like the black and dalmation morphs from the Solomon Islands). puffers are great fish in general, but dogface puffers are awesome. :)

I have a Green Spotted right now. Hes by himself in a 36 gallon. I want to move him to a 55 soon and add some more livestock...possibly an eel but I am not sure how everyone will get along. Any ideas? In a month he'll be up to full salt conditions after about.6 months of raising salinity.

I have a feeling the little guy might become lunch for an eel and the puffers poison would kill the eel. I could be wrong tho cuz I know nothing about eels. They just look amazing!

I've also owned a GSP in the past and loved him to death. Puffers are my favorite fish other then blennies cuz they both have curiouser and interactive personalities. Something you don't see alot of in fish especially freshwater.

Has anyone had to play dentist on your puffer yet? I know alot of puffer owners for freshwater and brackish have gotten use to trimming the beaks of there puffers. I've done it miraculously without sedating my amazon in the past.

Sorry I can't compare to sw puffers but I still have experience otherwise :)

Any ideas for puffer fenatics as to which puffer would be good for a 50g and live a few years there before outgrowing it. Like any dwarf puffers or other puffers then Green spotted. If not I think I'll have to get me 2 green spotted for my project. It's so hard to say no to them when you see them! HAHA

My dogface does that pretty regularly. Usually mine does that after he has had a big meal and when he is ready for more food...he wont hesitate to come to the front of the tank.

Here are my guineafowl and golden puffers. They are fed shelled foods regularly and those trim their teeth. They also bite on the live rocks. I never had to manually trim their teeth.

My dog face puffer was the very first fish I bought. My daughter has named him puffy and he is awesome. He will come to the top and actually let you pet him when he gets fed. Ive had him 1 1/2 years or so in my 180 FOWLR. He is in there with a couple tangs, grouper, snow flake eel, and some wrasses.

I have two southern puffers in my GOMT(gulf of mexico tank) and they seem to be doing well. I feed them live shrimp and silversides, along with some mysis and brine once in a while.

My dogface puffer hasn't eaten in 3-4 days now. Just lye's around. I've tested all water parameters. Everything is perfect. temp 79, ph 8.2, 0.0.0.0.0 everything else... Any thoughts?

He was purchased about 14 months ago. Not quarantined due to my previous system of 2 fish... He has always eaten, anytime we get near the tank, he would come up and eat. Krill shrimp, mysis and Ocean nutrition Pellets... Even when he was transferred to my new 235g. (4 weeks ago) he acted normal...

Do you see him moving his jaw? What percentage of his diet consists of krill? Krill has been known to cause "locked-jaw" where the puffer cannot move his jaws and as a result cannot eat, and eventually dies of starvation.

Does he eat marine-based seafood? whole shrimp, hard-shelled clams, mussels, scallops, etc? these are the food that should be fed to him as puffers need the nutritions found in seafood. otherwise, over time he would develop locked-jaw from lack of proper nutritions.

Puffers have been known to go on hunger strikes, only real way to get them to eat again is to force feed. I had to do that to my porcupine puffer a few years ago. He wouldn't eat anything for over a week, then I made him eat a gut packed ghost shrimp, he has been a super pig ever since
