Well, the coloring was the orange tiger stripe similar to so many you see and the scutes on the shell are very smooth just like the derasa which is what it was when I bought it a few years back. I believe the coloring was due to a lack of proper lighting for a while and also, maybe, nutrient issues in the water. But it is a derasa. What are these Iridophores you speak of?
the purple-blue circles just inside the gold brown rim.Derasa' are usually small black dots all the way out on the edge of the mantle. the shell of Gigas and Derasa are just about identical.

Thank you! It's small for a deresa. Somewhere around 3-4". It has added an inch of new white growth sinch I purchased it. Now looking at the dates, it is a whole two months old. This was it when I bought it: http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/31-deresa.jpg

my derasa is tiny, too. when i got it i'd say it was no bigger than 2 inches, probably smaller. i think it's grown about an inch since then. i need to post a more recent photo to compare.
