potters angel vs flame angel

IMO...Even when you find one that is eating, there is still a chance that it will just die, weeks/months later, for 'no' reason!

this is what happened to mine. eating fine, looked fat and healthy and then it was dead, for no apparent reason.

Potters are pretty hard to keep alive. I get them in at work every now and than and they normally come in rough shape from shipping and stress but they are hard to get to eat within the first week.

I've had both Flame and Potter's. Currently I have a Potter's and have grown to like the colouration and pattern more than a Flame. Again, this is personal preference. I have two maxima clams - 1 is fairly large at approx. 12" and the other is approx 5". The Potter's Angel has never looked nor nipped at it. It has nipped at a small piece of acro I have but quickly lost interest. It nips and seems to graze on my live rock but hasn't touched anything else. Sometimes (from experience) it's a roll of the dice as to whether or not these angels will nip at corals. I hope this helps.

Feed the heck out of it and you have a much better chance of it not nipping. I've had both Flame and (currently) Potter's angels, and feed three times a day of various foods (NLS/Formula 1/Formula 2 and frozen seafood medley that I make), and my Potter's doesn't nip my clams or corals.

When he was first introduced though, he seemed to nip some of my montipora occasionally, but that soon passed.

Ive had both a flame and potters...while I do love flames, I decided to go with a potters...the first one died after a week, I was dumb and bought him the same day he came into the LFS..the second one I bought was at the LFS for a month and I tried it again..no QT...ate flakes on first try. Has been a model citizen ever since, i have two maximas and I've seen him nip at the clams maybe once or twice, nothing to be concerned with. Potters are a different kind of beauty and whenever I have people over they always comment on how cool he looks. If I had a bigger tank I would get both, but for the time being I couldn't be more happy with my choice. I guess since I'm a veteran aquarist, I like the potter more just because I know the difficulty in having them. The key is to find one that is eating already. Either way, both option is a good decision. The past flames I've had have been model citizens as well

I've had 2 flames and neither of them touched any corals. I never had any health problems with them and they were good eaters. I kept them with other centropyges and didn't have any aggression problems. I love the flames because of their striking coloration.

I have a pair of potters in my tank. had one for over a year now, and the female for 3 months, Now all I have in this tank is Z's and p's in the tank, because the male went to work on most all my LPS - Blastos / acans / favia- favite. And nipped on a lot of sps. However, both are doing great! But at least in my experience, he is not reef safe.

IMO both r strikingly beautiful.

However didn't have good luck with the potters. tried twice both came in active, healthy, vivid coloring and eating flakes right away. first one got beaten up by the existing flame, net him back to qt and perished the following day. 2nd one was doing very well but somehow got stabbed by the cleaner shrimp's arm (there is no way i can catch him and remove that), that arm eventually caused a rot in the flesh and he....died.

Potters are no different than an other angel. The problem is when they are at your LFS. They feed the Potters fish food that's to big. Potters may take a week to settle in and still might be disorient.. Try very small fish food most likely they will go after first. Also they should be treated in some kind of cooper. Mostly likely will get ick or fluke if not treated.

I made a decision to this question only last week. I was going to go for a flame, cheaper, and seemingly easier to keep, but I found a potters that is bold, stares me down from right out in the open, and he fed Its a real relief because he is now eating frozen and pellet, as well as occasional Nori. I think that it's always going to be the individual fish, I'm not in the clear yet, but by getting a specimen that was collected well, and has been through QT at my LFS, and still comes out plump and eating, well I believe I've given my self a good start

at the end of the day they are both dwarf angels and they are known to pick at soft corals, in my opinion go with what you want. at the end of the day you can remove the fish if it nips at anything. you just need to keep an eye on your tank.
