Powder Blue Tang Question

How territorial/nasty is a Powder Blue Tang?

I want to add the following to my tank:

Flame Angel
Bellus Angel
Powder Blue Tang

Unfortunately the Bellus Angel is very hard to find. I was going to add them all at the same time for territorial reasons. I hear that this is the best way for angels not to fight. Well the LFS said it might be 6 months before a Bellus comes in. Anyway, I was thinking about going ahead and getting the Flame Angel and Powder Blue. Then try to get a Bellus Angel whenever it comes in. I know someone that added a Bellus after having a Flame Angel in his tank and he didn't have any problems. So I might be OK with the flame, but does anyone know how the Powder Blue might react?

Thanks

The angles will be the big problem, I would just get the Bellus Angel if thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s what you want.

The tank is too small to mix them, also too small for the tang. I would go with a smaller tang powder blues get big. They wonââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t do good in a small tank and I wouldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t recommend them for a beginner.

Thanks for the input. If the Powder Blue Tang is OK with an Angel coming in after him, then I think I will go ahead and get him. I'm going to get both the Flame and Powder Blue now. I'll try an introduce the Bellus later. If they don't get along, I'll just exchange the Flame later :)

Interesting. That's the one thing I hate about this hobby, I see different guidelines for everything. The plan is to get a small tang and then upgrade the tank next year to bigger one. LOL I see size requirements from 75g to 150g. I've seen a Flame, Bellus, and Hippo in a 90...all full grown (or pretty close). Maybe that person is lucky. Who knows.

I still think a 75 gallon tank is too small for a large tang, and a delicate powder blue wouldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t be a good choice. The tank is too small for two dwarf angles, I canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t get away with it in my 180, they will kill each other.

i have a PB tang and a coral beauty in my 75g. hes been in there for about 6-7 months now. hes now a little over 4" nose to tail. i got him when he was about maybe 3 1/2 inches. and he hasnt grown much. i do plan on getting a larger tank, but hes very happy right now. him and the CB get along great. if you get one small, say less than 3 inches he will be fine in a 75g for a couple of years. its not like they grow to full length in 6 months! just keep their diet varied which veggies, and meaty foods and all will be good. a QT will be a good idea with them (or any fish) as well. tangs are known to get ick easily. and making sure yours doesnt before you put him in the display will make life easier for you.i will agree that 2 dwarf angels in a 75g is not a good idea. they just wont get along.

heres a vid of my PB

Upgrade the tank first, then get the Tang. :p

The reason he is not growing fast is because of the size of your tank. A stunted growth spurt is not healthy for the longevity of the fish. He probably is very healthy, not denying that. Tangs should reach 80% of their normal length in the wild in the first 15% of their lifespan. The lifespan of Acanthurids is 35 years in the wild and they grow up to 12" for arguements sake. If you do the math that is roughly 9.6 inches in the first 5.25 years of it's life for it to be healthy! Now obvioulsy some will live longer or shorter and some will grow longer or shorter but this is just to point out why most people don't keep them in tanks that small. It simple isn't healthy for the fish. This was taken from an article by Henry C. Shultz III from Reefkeeping Magazine.

Hope this helps!

Get a yellow tang for the 75, the powder blue will probably get too big. I have a 125 and consider it barely adequate for the powder blue I have -- I have minimized LR and built PVC stands just to make sure there's enough swimming area...

The flame and the bellus would shred each other in anything less than say a 180, IMO.

well I got a powder brown for my 75 gallon and they the smallest of thet type of tang and only get 8 inches so Hopefully it wil be happy there

I put my foxface in my 125 after my PBT was established. The PBT almost killed him. Several days later he gave up and now they're best friends. I wouldn't think a Bellus Angel would be aas lucky as they don't have any means of defending themselves like a foxface.
