Powder Blue VS Freshwater Dip

Hi.

aprox 2 months ago I purchased a Powder Blue Tang.
The Tang is doing really good.
Eating and all you want.

But to my disappointment he started
with a real bad case of white spots.

My first and most important question...
Can I fresh water dip a powder blue?
I know these fish are pretty sensitive towards water changes.

Another question...
According to my "OBSERVATION"
It seems to me there are 2 types of white spots
The type that affects all fish.
And the type that mostly Affects only Powder Blues.

I Am Saying this because the white spots are only affecting my tang and none of the other fish.

Can you guys give me some comment on this "OBSERVATION" of mine.

has anyone tried the 3 day transfer method?

What is the best, low chemical method to qt a fine looking fish from the LFS?

I was planning on just doing 6 weeks of hypo. It says not to use LR. But I just want to use LR for nitrification. I'm not planning on any copper. And the LR i was going to cook off anyhow bc it has aptasia. Is this idea OK for a hypo tank?

Hypo does not kill velvet...so what should I do if I'm hypoing and I still spot white stuff?? That's probably velvet then, right? So then what? If I don't see velvet within the 6 weeks, should I be free and clear?

My Tang has velvet.
I Did a bit of reading,
and most people advised me to
commence with a freshwater dip.

I read on saltaquarium.about.com that it is
advised to add a medication in the dip.
So I added a few drops of copper treatment.

When I placed the fish into the dip
he lay on his side for aprox 45 sec.
Which is normal to my knowledge.

Then the fish started swimming around
trying to get out of the water.
I Removed the fish after about 2 min in total.

When I placed the fish back into the tank
he was not responding.
It is now aprox 2 hours later.
And the fish is still sitting in one corner breathing rapidly.
No swimming.

Can you guys please give me some advice.
Things are not looking good.

If your tang has velvet then it is in your tank and the other fish will either get it or will be carriers for other fish. It is possible for some fish to develop an immunity to velvet, but don't ever count on it. Setup a quarentine tank and treat all fish with copper. Cupramine is my favorite as it is really affective and well tolerated by most fish. Leave the main tank fishless for 6 weeks.

As far as the powder blue I would turn off the lights and let him be for today. Any further stress may push him over the edge.

I have been told that copper is more toxic at lower salinity so doing a FW dip with copper may be risky. I've never done one with copper.

Freshwater dips are normally stressful enough. If the pH and temperature of the dip do not match the water that the fish came from it can be lethal. Adding copper to freshwater is simply deadly. I hope the fish recovers. If it does please don't make the same mistakes again. You are not going to cure velvet or ich with FW dips anyway.

I think that you need to slow down and be sure that you have identified the problem correctly before you do anything else. Please describe all the symptoms in detail and tell us ALL of your water parameters. Are all the fish from the tank scratching violently and breathing rapidly? If one fish has velvet then all exposed fish have it.

Ok. Thanx for all your help.

There is no need to reply on this tread anymore.
The tang has past away.

But the reason to my surprise was not the copper nor the whit spots.

After the fish died I dissected it for a closer look at the problem.
It seems to me that the full stomach that I thought was due to a good diet.
Was actually a internal blockage.

The fish died due to the fact that it ate some type of algae that blocked his entire system.

Nothing that I could have done would have prevented it.

Thanx again for your help.

Hi TerryB

Thanx for the help.
None of my other fish are showing any symptoms of any sort.
But I will monitor the situation closely.

My NH3/NO2/NO3 are all 0
PH +-8.3
Tank size is 400L (+- 100Gal)

The dip was heated to the same temp as that of the tank.
Ph was also adjusted.
