power heads

i have heard stories about bad things heppening to rios (oil leaks, explosions you know little stuff) But i have heard that Maxijets are good. They may not be super small but they are good.

good luck

it appears the maxi jets series would be the winner here, really depends on your tank size too. rio's as stated have a bad rep and give off a lot of heat. maxi jets are more efficent and give off less heat(takes a lot less to heat up a nano then a large tank)

Obviously it depends on the size of the tank...........

I've used and like the Rio powerheads. I'm currently using a Rio 200 (138 gph), 90 (80 gph), and 600 (200gph) in three tanks. They work fine as long as they're maintained (cleaned) on a regular basis. I've had no heat issues with Rios.

The mini jets/ micro jets are OK for small tanks but I don't care for them. They're actually designed for fountains and in our application the intake is on the back against the glass. It doesn't take much to plug them up. If you use these pumps remove the prefilter under the intake grill.

Maxijets are good solid pumps but they're big. IMO they're best for applications where they're not visible in the main tank. I'm using an MJ 1200 as a return pump for a ten gallon setup and it works/looks fine sitting in a sump.

Powersweeps are big and prone to stopping rotating. I've used them in a prop tank but won't use them in a show tank.

The Tunze minis are tiny and good for tanks under 10 gallons. Like the microjets the intake is prone to clogging though.

I heard good things about the Aquaglobe powerheads but haven't tried one yet. Their big advantage is that they can be aimed. Other than the maxijets the output of the other powerheads can't be aimed without moving the whole powerhead.

On a side note it's been my experience that using powerheads that are too big for the tank is the cause of most heat problems in nanos. I recently swapped out for a smaller powerhead in my 5.5 and dropped the temp 4 degrees.

i posted this on one of markandkristen other post. Tunze makes a nano PH #106. 1 1/4"x2.0"x2.5" theyre rated @ 70.2 gph. dont get scared i have 1 of them in a 3g. and 3 of them in a 5g. they have large exports so blowing current isnt an issue. they move the volume not the toilet bowl effect. $12.99 @ PA

the aquarium systems micro jet 606 is another great small pump for a nano, its the little cousin to the maxi-jet line, but with the same output at a 600.
