Powerhead as a return pump

Anybody has experience on using powerhead as a return pump in the sump? A local LFS told me he used a Aquaclear 50 powerhead in his sump (headheight 3-feet) and the performance is OK!

I've been using Rio 90's as pumps for my phosphate reactor and refugium. They work fine, have about the flow that I'm looking for. The heads also have the perfect size for 1/2" tubing. It's hard finding a small pump.

i use a RIO 2100 on both my 30 gal and my pond
