POWERHEAD HELP! Which one to use? Please read:

I will be putting a powerhead in a 55gallon tank. I have heard that you only need about 10 times the gallon size of your tank, which would put me at around 600. Question: is ONE 600 gph powerhead such as a SEIO good enough, or should I go with TWO powerheads such as HAGEN 50's or MAXI-JET 1200's? Honestly, I don't think I need 4 of these things like some ppl do, so waht should I get? Thank you very much to all!

Really a lot depends upon what you're planning upon putting in your reef tank... If you're wanting to keep sps you need just about as much flow as possible... Especially montiporas and your thicker branched acros... You'll probably want it coming from more than one direction, so you'll need multiple PH's... I like Seio's for the money... But your more powerfull PH's will sometimes suck fish or anemones into them... I've had a sebae anemone get sucked up into my seio... And one of my fellow club members has had a couple Copper Banded Butterlies meet their demise... There are other things to consider, such as wavemaking devices and controllers... Hope this helps... :D

i have a 50 breader and i have 3 maxi 1200's (1 feeds my refugium) and 1 seio 620. i'd go with as much flow as possible as it helps to keep the detritus from building up on the rocks and keeps the fish swimming happy. just so you know though Seio's have a reputatation for not restarting after their power is interupted. happend to me and i've read similar posts here about it. go w. the maxi's.

Detritus? is that.....

Detritus? is that.....

Is that the damn fuzzy stuff that is building on my rocks? If so, I need to get these heads soon!

Try Hagen powerheads, they have the bracket that hangs over the side of your tank - all the suction cups fail eventually. Several smaller pumps with alternating flows is better than one large one.
