Really Depends on your aquascape. You want the flow so it goes where it is needed most and to minimize dead spots. A good starting place would be in the corners. When you feed the tank look for places where the food is dropping to the bottom and these are your "dead spots". Then adjust accordingly.
Here's a picture of my 37gal setup... Two MaxJet1200's (with hydor deflectors), the return from my HOB fuge and the output of my Fluval 404 canister ( I've also got a maxjet 600 blowing straight up the back behind the LR ).....
The photo was taken right after setup and now has several corals and fish in it and everything gets good alternating flow... No dutritus build up....
