Powerhead placement on longer tanks...

Hey everyone,

I thought I had my powerheads in a pretty good place until yesterday.

One of the WP40s on my tank burned out and I replaced it with a RW-20.

The RW-20 is much stronger and has a wider flow pattern than even my WP60s.

Now I'm wondering how I should place my powerheads.

Each end of the tank has a WP60 facing the center of the tank. On the back glass, near each end I have a WP40 on each side (Now one RW-20). Facing down the tank and slightly up.

Then towards the middle of tank I have two more WP40s.

Sort of looks like this:

With the RW-20 having such a wide flow pattern, I'm getting splashing at the top of the tank.

I was going to move the RW-20 further down the glass and point it down and behind the rocks.

I'd love to see how you guys with 8'+ long tanks have your powerheads setup :)

I have 2 MP 60s on the overflow side and 1 MP 60 on the return side (Right Panel & Left panel respectively). I run them on nutrient transport mode most of the time and get a nice wave through the tank. Mostly SPS tank & 8ft long, 36" wide.

Thanks :)

Debating getting APEX adapters for the Jebaos... want more control...

One thing I'll mention is that as your coral grow in, they will impede flow. Consider something that will have the ability to be added to, or turned up if you are starting from smaller pieces of coral.

Thanks Chris.

Switching all my WP40s and 60s to RW-20s.

They are much stronger than even the WP60s and have a much wider flow pattern. Running them at 100% (Only choice for Else mode) is way too strong for the tank.

Another reason I want to control them all by the Apex, to do some sort of randomness and control the power.

Should let me dial them way up if I want :)

My tank is 8' long by 4' wide. I run 2 Tunze 6205's on the rear wall 4' wall pointing down the 8' length of the tank along with 1 6205 on one side of the central overflow pointing the same direction as the other two Tunze's. This creates a great surge effect stright down the 8' length of the tank and a standing 1.5" wave at the end of the 8' length. I have my Tunze's controlled by my Apex and spent a fair amount of time playing with the pulse length to get the right timing but the results were terrific with all 3 power heads in my 480g display pointing the same direction towards one end of the tank.

Sounds good, I have some RW15's and Love them, can't imagine the RW20's may have to get one to play with it on lower speeds.

It's an insane powerhead. It's at 2 bars of power and blowing my freshly cleaned WP60 out of the water...
