How wide does the mp40 push flow
powerhead recommendations for..

in a 3 foot tank, it should push it to the end and make for some back flow... in a 4 foot tank not so much... but they are not made to work like that anyhow... if you have one, it should be centered on the back wall, and if 2, one at each end, and ideally, you should have 3, but thats not practical for most... they work with each other, and the contact of opposite flow from each end, is waht makes for the chaotic and random flow that everyone likes for their sps...

Makes flow 3 foot wide? Width is what im looking for, length is merely 30"

so before i pull the trigger, mp40 vs 2 mp10s? single pump sounds nice for simplicity/maint

im actually downgrading from my 6' tank down to the cube
I'm running 2 MP10's in my 45 gallon cube and haven't had any sand issues.I run them at 100% reef crest and the flow is great for the sps. I have mostly chalices at the bottom, but the way I have them positioned its only moderate to low flow on the sandbed. I originally tried a MP40, but that guy would push the sand to one side of the tank. I'm thinking with a 93 gallon you could do a MP40 and MP10.

I agree with newbie. As long as your glass is 3/8" or lower then Id go with the 2xmp10's. THis will give you the most diversity and flexibility. If you position them on the left and right of the back glass you can try running them in sync mode that way if they do blow sand, when the flow changes from heavy right side/lower left side to heavy left side/lower right side, it will basically negate the sand blowing by just constantly pushing sand back and forth. Also, the MP10 has been tested to push over 1900gph instead of the 1500 the manufacturer claims and I can attest to that as a mp10 owner. It MOVES some water man.
If you go with an mp40 it will cost more than 2 10's and you will have to compromise on whether to let it blow sand in order to reach the other side or turning it down to stop the sand shifting but loose the flow on the far end...
Plus realize that having only one pump that blows in the same direction, no mater how varied that flow is, you will still find your corals growing in the direction of flow. I had this in my NC28 even though I had return nozzles on both sides of the tank with mj1200 pumps alternating with a wave maker. The mp10 is like using a 400watt halide with a small pc actinic. No matter how bright it is, itll still be washed out by the halides intensity.
All that being said. I will likely end up buying another mp10 and upgrading my gen2 driver for the gen3 ES driver so that I can sync/antisync them in my 45 gal. FOr the time being I will be using the mp10 gen 2 and a mj1200 with the propellar that comes with them now on the current version. Only problem is that the mj's absolutely cannot be used with a wave maker/ timer because they are AC powered and have a stop built into the propellar to make it spin the proper way which makes them rattle and clunk on start up. Ill let you know how that works out when I have the tank fully up and running with corals in it. Currently I have 2 of the mj's in the tank with just live rock and sand with a few fish. The flow is good but it blows sand pretty bad even with "special grade" sized aragonite.

well hey, if cash isnt an issue...2 mp40's please!
I have my MP10 ES's on my 45 gallon Oceanic with 1/2" Starfire glass. Don't use the rubber spacers, but they work fine. I'd recommend to use the tie's, so they don't fall and hit the ground if you bump them.
2 or 3 MP10's would be cool in your 93 gallon and if you sync them it works awesome. I know guys running 3 Vortechs with two on the back glass of the cube and one going across. I picked up a Apex controller with the Vortech Module to customize the flow throughout the day, but haven't had time to set it up..lol
