Powerhead

I am starting a 40 gallon breeder for the first time, to start just getting one or two live rock, some live sand, and probably 2 fish to start. I have an aquaclear 110 filter and I'm looking for recommendations for a power head on the other side of the tank. Any suggestions from others with tank this size would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest two powerheads on each side of the tank either pointing at each other to create randomness of flow or set them up in a way to create a circular(revolving) current. For a breeder the absolute cheapest option would be to go with the standard wavemakers on ebay, you can get two for like $20 (what I did). Otherwise the hydor koralia, or the tunze turbelle's are good higher quality wavemakers. Jebao also makes some cheaper adjustable wavemakers.

On that size tank you will need 2 even with the filter. The filters return flow is different from what a powerhead provides.

Jebao has pretty good wavemakers decently priced

hydors are well priced

Aqamai looks very nice

You will need about 30lbs liverock in a 40g. That's your bio filter.

I wouldn't cycle with fish.

Okay thank you. I saw the jebao a few times on here and saw lot good things about them. Would i need a bigger size or 2 smaller guys?. The nice thing is my local aquarium store gives me cured live rock and the water it was in to help with the cycle process which is nice.

For a tank that size I would probably go with two of the Koralia Evolutions 1150's. Place them up top at opposite ends of the tank facing each other. The center of the tank will be pretty chaotic in terms of flow and then this will dissipate out towards the ends. Also, because these pumps are on a swivel you can adjust the currents in the tank by simply pushing one of the pumps up, down, left or right. Piece of cake.

Would that be to much for fish? Eventually I am going to put coral in there too but to start I'm just going to start with 1 decent size rock and sand get things going and then some fish and then another rock and then coral.
