Ultimately I prefer Tunze Streams over just about any other "powerhead", and will be using a couple of them off of a multicontroller in a 75g sps system I am getting ready to setup. Having said that, they are not the cheapest alternative out there. If you are wanting something with similar, but not exact flow patterns as the Streams, take a look at the Rio Seio pumps. Down side to them is that you can not pulse them on and off without risk of premature failure. For something that would vary some for random water flow, and not break the budget, look at using 4 x MJ1200s with a wavemaker on them. HTH

I have one Seio 820 and the smallest controllable Tunze stream available that runs on a controller on pulse mode.
I have a 75 with 4-MJ1200 and I am upgrading to 2-6000 Tunze with the 7095 controller. The 4MJ on a Red Sea wavemaker, which is not enough water flow for my SPS and LPS. I also have a Hang on HOT Magnum 250 plus my Mag 7 return for about 600gal/hr.
I have a BB tank and needed more circulation to get the detritus off the bottom.
If I knew then what I know now I would have went with the Tunze from the start. JM2cents
Just remember with the wave master not all 4 pumps are on at the same time so the flow is not 295gal/hour x 4, its more like 3x295.

If your not going to have SPS, you should be able to get away with either the 4MJ or the Seio's with a wavemaker and save yourself the $$ on the Tunze. You just want to make sure you have enough waterflow to get the detritus to your overflow box to your skimmer. If you have a BB tank and let the detritus settle in a corner without circulation it will cause a potential problem with HA (dreaded nitrates and PO4)

If I didn't have Sps then I wouldn't have a tunze. The only problem I face when I used maxijet was that they have a very small concentrated water flow instead of spread out like the seio. I think tunze are still the best but I wouldn't spend the $$$ on them unless I was going sps.

I dont think anyone is suggesting that SPS is the only organism that requires high flow, or would appreciate high flow, i think people are saying that sps NEEDS a very good flow system. I mentioned that I might want a cheap one, so they were reccomending ones i coudl get away with.
Thing is I already have a closed loop system with 950 gph flow. However, I want to add some power heads for extra flow, and/or get rid of the wet/dry system I have. My trates are high and I just started seeing a little patch of cyano where the flow was weak. there are also dead spots behing the LR.

Exactily... SPS are the only specimen in an aquarium that really NEEDS alternating high flow. Sure LPS probably like it but 99% of the time it isn't manditory. I'm not saying you shouldn't have any circulation on a LPS/softie tank but its not as much a requirement as a SPS tank. I've seen 120 gallon tanks with just a small/moderate return and 2 or 3 maxijets with phenomenal LPS and softies.

If you have the money get the two Tunze Streams on the multicontroler.
