Powerheads FS - cheap

So what happens if they decide to quit working, overheat and leak melted epoxy into your tank and catch on fire?

Joe, be careful man, you might be saving some money now but something goes wrong and causes your tank to crash will it be worth it? I would never use a Rio pump in my saltwater tank and i definetly wouldn't use a generic Rio.

JMO of course, but as usual you get what what you pay for.

Hummm, that is probabally very valid. I don't like rio either but many use them on reefs. I don't buy Rio's anymore, but happened to have an old one laying around to compare with. I guess I am taking a risk. I just have one in my new 55 that is cycling. I will let it run awhile and see how it does. You are correct, you usually get what you pay for. But there truly are some bargains in the world that work quite well.

Thanks for the Comment, it is a very valid thought. Maybe I will just use it to circulate my ro trash can to see how it lasts?

I agree!

Hey, did you read my spiral CFL thread? Or did you hold yourself back? I imagine that generates even stronger feelings than this thread. I am just always trying to find a better way. I hate the idea of going MH because the bulb manufacturers are ripping reefers off and I hate supporting such things.

No i read it, you can go ahead and try all the money saving stuff you want, but before you do i would ask someone on RC because more than likely it already been tried. After you invest a TON of money in livestock, I'm sure you will understand better how important your equipment is and how it is better to just invest in the proper equipment the first time rather than trying to save a few dollars only to have it fail and kill livestock.

Good luck.

I have a long thread going on RC-lighting about this. I agree get the right equipment. But you have to remember, once it wasn't "possible" to keep corals in captivity. And then it wasn't possible to keep SPS in captivity. These were reponses in the past, but poeple tried new things and the effect is we can do these things now. These type of trials also led to better alternatives in many areas.

I am not going to try this on my main display, I have VHO there now and plan on adding, dare I say it, MH later this summer on the 90 I have from Ryan.

I am really not trying to save money here, I am sure it won't save money. I am just curious if it will work? I don't think this is the same issue as the power heads. They are a cheap alternative. This just may be an alternative.

So far from poeple that have actually tried this I have success stories. including SPS. And believe me I have invested a TON of money in livestock over the years. Again this would be a side tank test if I even try it. I know several people have the opinoin you shouldn't keep SPS corals with VHO's. I know this personally to b false, I am doing it. Ture maybe 2 years down the road it will fail on me. I sure have read about a bunch of people being very successful with it. So maybe these little lights can be successful as well. LED's will be the future anyway.

The other big issue here is I am learning about light. Hopefully some others will as well.
