Powerhead's

I had two of them and had to replace them. They work great but, the suctions cups slip off and they fall off the side of the glass every few days.
I have a Deep sand bed and every few days I had a sand storm and all my live rock and corals were heavily dusted with sand.

I have used an mj1200 in my cube for a week when my MP10 was waiting for a repair part. It does move a bunch of water but was not the quietest. Cups didn't hold more than a day. In a pinch it does work but I would not consider it for full time use in a den based system due to the noise. Spend a few dollars and get a pump that gets it done quietly and with a robust capability. Money well spent IMO.

I would not get the MaxiJet. I bought one as my first PH and it created sand storms in my tank like crazy. For a barebottom tank i could see it being good. But its still a loud powerhead. Plus the stream it blows in so narrow. Look into Hydor Koralia if you are on a tight budget. If not look at the other recommendations. Good luck.

They are essentially the bottom of the market for quality/features/design. The flow pattern is a bit more narrowly focused. They can become prone to starting in reverse. The mounting mechanism is rather large. Powerhead rather heavy. Multiple light suction cups used rather then one big one.

Does the following powerhead (used in it's circulation mode) work well?

I wanted to get a few for my new 55 gallon reef tank. What/how many would you recommend size-wise?

Marineland switched there manufacturer from Italy to china and the quality went way down. If you want the quality of the old maxijets you have to get it from cobalt aquatics they acquired the design from Marineland and are making the old reliable maxijets now.

I still have two of the old maxijets with the sureflow mod and each one is pumping out over 2000 gph. I absolutely love them the mod comes with different impellers so you don't have to have 2000gph you can have less if need be.

here's a video on the whole kit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxek16dLTTE

*Edit* I just want to add that these pumps are over 7 years old now and still working just as good as the day I installed them.

If you're looking to go the inexpensive route, I'd suggest checking out Hydor's Koralia Evolution line. They're inexpensive, have a terrific magnet mounting system, and have a very good flow pattern - much better/wider than the MaxiJets. I have a number of MJ's that are relegated to my mixing containers now because that's really all I think they're good for.

Whichever route you go, I'd also suggest at least two powerheads on opposite ends of the tank; one's not enough on a 55g tank, IMO.

One last word of advice: wait until next week to buy this stuff, as everyone is going to have Black Friday sales, and most places usually run them for a few days straight.

Thank you for all the responses everyone!

I am not very interested in the Koralia's, and Jabao's are a little bit expensive for me (I know 100$ isn't really that bad) but I'm on a pretty tight budget for this tank!

If your set on the maxijet pumps you will want the colbalt brand, these are the original maxijets and last a very long time but they are more spendy then the marineland brand and you dont get the high output attachment.

I have two of these and no longer use them in the circulation mode. These are too loud. The front casing and impeller doesn't hold tight and there will eventually be a point where the vibration begins. I now use these for my sump in the old style mode on a timer to stir the intake section of my sump.

hold up! don't buy anything just yet!!!!!

i see ur in my area. there HAS to be someone local that has an old koralia laying around for sale. post a "wanted" in the west coast/MARS area of this website.
almost for sure you can get one for cheap....
