Powerheads

What is the difference between the Tunze Stream and the Turbelle powerheads? I am looking for in tank circulation for reef and fish tank.

Stream pumps come as either Electronic powerheads or synchronous powerheads. Streams produce a high flow low pressure current. They use a propeller rather than an impeller.

Turbelle Electronic pumps use an Electronic motorblock like the Electronic Streams. These motors are computer controlled and run on low voltage. This enables some neat tricks like being able to pulse the flow and speed up and slow down the pumps with a controller. Turbelle Electronic use an impeller but they also produce a fairly low pressure high flow current- just less of it. Streams are for larger tanks, and tanks with high flow demands like SPS. Turbelle Electronic are for smaller tanks or larger tanks with lower flow demands.

My bad, Turbelle powerheads are also available as electronic or synchronous. See above for electonic. The synchronous pumps are more or less the same but don't allow any form of control and cannot be used on wavemakers.

Thank you for your info. I see two types of Turbelle, classic 2002or 4002 and electronic 7210, 7310 and 7410. Any difference between these two? Also looks like electronic kit includes singlecontroller? I take it for my smaller size tank you recommend turbelle over stream. Would you recommend a larger capacity pump (7410) pulsated or two smaller (7210) alternating. My interest is surge you see on reefs where there is current, then pause and then another current surge. If you recommend two pumps, do you recommend single controller for each pump or go to multicontroller?

...need to know alot more about your system before a useful recommendation could be made. tank size, inhabitants, other flow sources, etc

90 gallon mainly fish with live rock and sponges. Other flow source would just be return line from sump. It probably returns 400-500 gal per hr. Limited by 1 in. bulkhead fitting on overflow. I would be usin turbelle as only other flow source.

The 2002 and 4002 are what are now called Turbelle Classic. They are an old fashioned top mounted motor. While they are controllable, control is more expensive and they are high maintenance as the need periodic dissassembly for bearing and seal replacements. I only recommend them where heat is areal issue because they add zero heat and for the mechanically inclined they will last a lifetime.

The 7210/2, 7310/2 and 7410/2 are no longer made. Now you will just order a seperate pump and controller. For a tank of your size I would get the 7400/2 and a single controller. You could feasibly get a 6000 Stream in a tank that size as well provided you don't have a DSB or have enough rock to help deflect flow.

I've got a 46 gal bow, primarily SPS, that is obviously to small for a stream. Which of your smaller units and in what combinations would you recommend to get the same effect as the stream, just a lot smaller scale?

Rich - where's the helmet? I may have to take you up on the offer. I need more flow and after talking to you after your initial purchase, I have been toying with picking one up.
