I'm setting up a 75g and was wondering how strong a flow do I need to keep mainly zoos?

Minimum turnover would be 1500gph at 20x. So you would need to add up what the gph of a couple of powerhead and your return, from your sump, and match or beat that number. 20x, imo, is a minimum value - I'd go with more.

Seios are a great additon! I use 4 820's in my 55gal but they take up alot of space. If I was going to fork out money for pumps again I would just have bought a tunze or 2. For a 75gal tank I would use 2 tunze pumps and a return pump off your sump. That will give ya plenty, not only that they are durable, low maint. and better quality than most medium cost powerheads.

You will save money on electricity as well as they use about 1/2 to 1/4 the energy to operate. So they will pay for themselves over time in the electric bill.

Thats just what I would do if I was starting from scratch or starting over.

Oh and they are controllable too so you can setup a wave motion with the controller that tunze also manufactures. Nice addition if you are willing to fork out the $$$$

I ordered an Iwaki 70 rlt which claims a 1500gph rate for my return pump. Is anything else needed?

HEHEHEHE, Iwaki pumps are under rated especially if you plumb them in the right way. I would still go with 2 tunze on either end of the tank, you will really like them. Don't forget the controller that goes with them, it makes for an awesome match.

Is the Iwaki for a closed loop or your return? It is an external pump right. The only thing I don't like about those pumps is the watts used. I think that pump will run at about 350watts. So that is 4.3 gph/w. But they seem to be very dependable.

You could have got 2 little tunze nanostreams 6045, but there are not controllable. They push out almost 1200gph each at only $95. The best thing is they only use 8w. 8w! that is 150gph/w which is 35x more efficient than the Iwaki.

Spmedi: The Iwaki is my return pump. I don't know what a closed loop is but I've heard of it. The reason I chose Iwaki is my friend has had his for 10 ears and the guy he got it from had it for 5. Money well spent I hope.

Yea Iwaki pumps are very inefficient with power but they are known to last 20 years or more without too much maint.

I would get any of the lower GPH tunze pumps that are controllable, you can even get the 2 and a controller in a kit saves you time tracking down everything you need, or adding stuff to your cart. LOL I think it also saves you money.

I would agree with the Tunze as well.

Keep in mind that you most likely will not want to push 1500gph through your some. I would not try to use my return to also generate most of my flow.

If you go the maxi-jet route look at the 9 to maybe replace the 12. There is a huge difference in power used which also means less heat.
