PPE Palys

What lighting works best for Purple People Eater Palys? I have 2x150 HQI and 4x39 T5 bulbs and these palys are about 14' away from the metal halides.

They are multyplying but not displaying great coloration. When I first picked them up they looked amazing and now they are just ok. I wonder if they are getting too much light or perhaps not enough.....

I would like to hear from people who have these palys and what works best for them.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

To much light fades.. start at the floor of the tank and work your way up intill you find a "sweet spot". With MH lighting.. you should be just fine leaving them on the SB.

PPE's are zoanthids not palys, as are ALL people eaters. no matter, but just so you know ;)

I have my colony on the floor of the tank under 250's, but it is a shallow tank so by most peoples lighting persepctive it would be medium to high light.

as said...start them low. If you already have them higher take them down and see what happens. Just make sure they are in decent flow. They dont need high flow, but the water needs to always be moving decent or that can affect color as well

Thanks guy, I'll move them to the sand bed and see what happens. I was told that they like strong lighting and that I should move them to a higher area closer the MH but I thought that this would be too much light.

I'll place them lower and see what happens. They looked great when I purchased them and they are now a bit faded.

Do you guys have any pics of your PPE?
Cheers

I like 14K Hamilton bulbs. Mine are 250 watt.

Your PPE look great. How many polyps did you start with and how long did it take to get that many. The bulbs I use are 2x150 14K Phoenix and 4x39 watt Actinic T5s with individual reflectors.

Mine looked great when I first introduced them into the tank but they just look ok right now. I placed them about 14" away from the MH and perhaps this is too much light.

Thanks!

I started with 2.5 polyps a couple years ago. They were first in a 55 with T5 and NO flouresent bulbs with no growth.

They were moved in an upgrade to a 210 with 175 watt 10k XM bulbs with two 39 watt T5 actinics, they were in the 210 for awhile with a little growth.

I added a 250 watt hamition 14k There was a sudden burst of growth about 3-4 months ago. I have since replace the existing 175watt MH with 250 watt 14k. I have fragged this a bit and broken the colony into three seperate pieces hoping they will continue growing and also if there is an unexpected recession of polyps perhaps it would only affect one group.
But time will tell.

BTW I have have had these at nearly every level of the tank at one point in time. It seems they best growth is in the upper half of the tank.

I vote more light, not less. You're only running a 150W MH which is not very high PAR. It's hard for me to know how much light you're getting from the T5's. I'd say frag a couple and try them in the highest light spot you have for a few weeks and see how they do. Mine look great when they're pretty much right under a 250W Radium in the frag tank at about 4" under the water with a Large Lumenarc. That should be about 500-600 PAR which should be greater than anywhere in your tank.

I would venture to say more instead of less as well. I didnt catch that you were running 150's when I first posted

Cant say it will necessarily change the growth any but they seem to look more purple in more light. They arent all that fast fo growers. You can lose the purple altogether in less, and in really high light you can develop white speckles in them and a bright purple.

These are mine... had the colony for over 5 years now... started out with about 5-8 polyps!! 50+ now!!! enjoy....

Thanks! I have 4 t5 giesemann 2 actinic +, 1 aquablue +, 1 true actinic + a reefbrite led strip. I keep em on the sand in the lower right corner of my tank! About 22" from the light!
