Prazi Pro issues

Hello everybody.. I have terrible issues with the use of PraziPro treatment...

the history...

A couple week ago I bought a Scribble angel fish and started to show blurry eyes, I used RALLY on the main display because was the only one that show synthoms...

A couple days after that I received a naso tang.. but this guy never ate and die... after that my emperor angel fish started to show the same synthoms as the scribble... and I stated to use Prazi Pro to eliminate the flukes in the hole system... but today my emperor angel died at morning and the other fishes yellow tang, scribble, annularis and blue tang looks like are stressed like saying "take me out of this tank"... Im thinking about that the prazi pro treatment is poisoning my system...

Can any one tell me what can I do with? I dont have QT... =(
Thanks!!

I would start running carbon on the whole tank as soon as possible to remove the meds. Turn the skimmer back on and expect to get excessive foaming and prepare to deal with the extra skimmate. If not, just allow the skimmate to return to your sump to get the aeration up on the system.

If you have some ready mixed water available for a large water change, it would be wise to perform a change. If you can temporarily place the remaining fish in another tank or container with seasoned, clean water, this may be a good temporary route.

I am not familiar with RALLY, however doing a quick google search shows it contains formalin, acriflavine, and aminoacridine. Formalin in your display tank is not a good idea. These other compounds appear to be strong antiseptics.

I suspect you are experiencing the effects of combining Prazipro and RALLY. The directions advise against combining treatment with other medications.

I recommend you contact Hikari by phone to determine (or at this point confirm) if this is a toxic combination.

Invest in a QT tank and setup and use them.

I agree completely. Formalin is formaldehyde; a very potent med. Prazi-Pro has fewer side effects than any med I've ever heard of. PP is really the only med i'd ever use in a DT. I know Hikari says not to mix PP with other meds (this is a good general rule); but call them,, as suggested. They have excellent tech support. +1 on the QT/HT---its almost impossible to have long-term success in our hobby without one.

Prazipro is one of the safest meds out there. That being said, it should be used in a QT. Any med use in a display tank can put the tank at risk.

I'd suggest looking into a quarantine tank system. A simple 10 or 20 gallon tank with an aquaclear hang on back is great. Stick on a seachem ammonia badge for a 'backup', but don't use it to replace the usual ammonia testing. I'd also suggest an airpump and airstone, plus a few PVC pieces for hiding spots. An airstone never hurts, and helps keep O2 levels up when medicating. A good QT will save a lot of headache in the long run. Your healthy fish stay healthy, and any new fish won't have a chance to infect your fish or your display with parasites.

As an example: I got a clown and a few chromis a couple months back. The clown had brook and it wiped out everything in quarantine in short order. If I had put them in the display, I'd have major losses. I then got a replacement clown, and a dwarf angel. They went into QT. The clown was healthy, but the dwarf angel had internal and external parasites (flukes/worms) which then led to a secondary bacterial infection. Two weeks of treatment (prazipro+cupramine course, followed by a week of maracyn-2), plus and extra week of rest after. The fish are in the display and disease free.
One rather freaky worm/parasite came out of the side of the dwarf. Never even knew it was there until the meds started working on it. Nasty.

Triton, MrTusk, gweston...

Thank you very much for your comments, today I made a 70% water change in order to minimize the efect of both medications in the water, the fishes still alive but are stressed and they dont wanna eat yet...

I'll go with your sugestions about QT/HT...

The biggest problem now is that the combination of PP and Rally was "mortal"...

I have a reef tank and I've never had a problem with parasites/virus/infections/bateria... I dont understand why only in the FO and FOWLR can happend this issues...

Thanks a lot!!!

Likely by chance. Fish get sick in reef tanks as well. Maybe people overcrowd their fish only setups more often leading to declines in water quality and therefore fish health.

When you don't use a QT on all new fish; its just a matter of time before you introduce a parasite (assuming you do add new fish). This is true regardless of what type of tank you have.

Thanks guys for your comments...

Today I'll buy all that I need for the QT/HT... my fishes still alive and the system recovered...

Thanks a lot!!

Also just a note that prazi-pro will deplete O2 level in your tank, by a lot. I learned this expensive lesson a while ago. Now in my 29 G QT, I have a aquaclear 50, a small powerhead and an airpump.

Then PP have various side effects on the water and on the fishes too... Im thinking that the use of PP will be better as a dip instead of medication in a tank...

I switched to praziquantil powder some time ago. I have used both many times and prefer the powder. Overdosing praziquantil is toxic, but if you did the rec dosing, I doubt that it is the cause of the fishes distress.

Cloudy eyes does not always mean flukes. Crypto and Amyloodinium can cause it as well as many other agents.
