Prazi pro treatment and flukes

Have some fairy wrasses in a 10 gal. QT w/ flukes, no doubt about it. BTTRFLYGRL hoping you'll chime in here........... Well I gave them a FW dip, and flukes everywhere. So now I'm treating the QT with prazipro at the recommended dose. I have a hang on back aquaclear filter w/ sponges that are well seeded. I'm wondering if I may have a bacterial infection as well because they're eyes seem to be a little larger than normal. Can (and should I ) treat with an antibiotic at the same time as I'm doing the prazipro ? I think the bottle says not to treat with anything else. But I'm wondering if I can mix up some furan 2 into the food and add it that way ? Or should I just wait till the prazipro treatment is finished ?
Also, on this 10 gal. QT with regards to treating w/ prazipro, how shall I go about doing water changes ? And should I be adding the equivalent of the prazipro when I'm adding new water ? How long and how many treatments of prazipro should I be looking to do and what kind of follow-up on an antibiotic ?

they look just like flatworms..........but are white............they are also sitting in a cup of FW.......DEAD.

Secondary bacterial infections frequently accompany parasitic infection. The wounds caused by the parasites compromise the mucus/scale/skin barrier allowing bacteria and/or other pathogens entrance. If the fish is otherwise healthy, once the parasites are under control, then the bacterial infection often subsides without further treatment. I usually prefer formalin dips to FW dips, but it sounds obvious that they are working in this case. You might consider another couple of FW dips (watch the temp and pH) on the 3rd and 5th days after the first.

I also prefer Formalin dips, a little less stressful.
I usually lower the SG to around 1.015 also, slows down the reproduction of the flukes.
I wouldn't mix the two meds...wait until the Prazipro treatment is finished and see how the fish is doing. You will need to do at least 3 treatments of the Prazipro. The eggs are resistant to treatment and certain types can take up to 21 days to hatch.
As far as water changes, I'd do a little everyday. Vacuum out the bottom. I am a little picky, I will sometimes change almost half the water :) But that isn't necessary unless you start noticing ammonia. Changing 1/3 should be fine.

Oh...
Add the correct amount of Prazipro to the new water..don't redose the whole tank.

[is 'redose' even a word?? ]

I treated my 240 gal for flukes with prazi pro and it worked great. I lost a couple of snails, but no fish or leathers. Mine's is a fowlr.

thanx Kim, Terry, all. One other thing, one of them has developed popeye in one eye only. Shall I remove to another tank and treat w/ maracyn-2 (or furan 2) or leave him be. I ask this because its a 10 gallon qt tank and there is 3 wrasses in with him so I think he is not eating as fast as the other fish in there..........I would'nt think that is healthy for him to try to compete for food if he is trying to recover from popeye with all the other wrasses in there with him.

I would like to think redose is a word.

If you netted the fish to dip them then the popeye is probably from swelling due to injury. I don't use nets for that reason. If the eye is not cloudy then the swelling with often go away without treatment. See how the eye looks tomorrow.

thats the bad part........I did'nt want to use a net and cupped him with my hand.......then he flipped out , onto the carpet. So the eye is'nt cloudy, just VERY LARGE. He's alittle sluggish, (the fall happened 3 days ago) So I moved him to a 10 gallon by himself, and when I feed I turn off the pump, and then, only then can he catch the food, he dosent really have energy to go after it so I put it right in front of him and then he chows it pretty good. I'll be soaking in , selcon, vita chem, and some beta glucan. What do you think of that ?

Your plan sounds good. Did the popeye occur after the fall? I would also use hyposalinity to reduce the energy consumed for osmoregulation. Is your Qtank cycled? If the eye gets cloudy double dose with Maracyn-Two 5 to 7 days. Don't have to doubled dose the M2 if using hypo also. I would take the Prazo out.

Terry B

yes, the popeye occured after the fall, probley from that. The qt tank has a sponge on it, cycled, and that 10 gallon that he is in is free of the prazipro. It does have full strength sw, w/ Maracyn -2, double dose. Next water changes i do on it will start to lower the salinity, and only does ONE tablet. Eye is not cloudy, and I still have to turn off the pump so he can get the food, I actually have to put it by him ...... :( thanx
