PraziPro Gone Wrong

I just finished a 6 week Cupramine treatment in my 40g QT with an ehiem canister and HOB filter setup. After two water changes of 50% and running a skimmer with carbon I want to start dosing PraziPro. I adding 10ml and within two days all of the fish started breathing fast and the water became cloudy (milky looking). After checking for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates I removed the prazipro with a skimmer and carbon.

I ran into this problem before when trying to dose Cupramine and PraziPro together as many other members have tried this with no ill results and I had to remove it and continue with only Cupramine.

What am I doing wrong? Is cloudy water and fast breathing normal with Prazipro? Will adding a airstone help?

I routinely had problems with using praziquantel dissolved in ethanol - two to three days in and I would get a bacterial bloom from the alcohol that caused white cloudy water and rapid breathing in the fish. It was a bit hit or miss, it didn't happen all of the time. Now that I press it throuhg a fine mesh to get it into suspension in the water, I've not had any further issues.

Prazipro uses a different solvent - one of the non-toxic propylene glycols. I've not heard any other people having problems when using this in a quarantine tank - but, the glycol is a potential food source for some aerobic bacteria, just like the ethanol, so there is a potential for a similar issue.

Another problem that crops up is a bacterial bloom due to a large number of critters killed off by the prazi - you see this mainly when it is used in reef of FOWLR tanks. I see that you just finished a copper Rx, so that wouldn't be an issue in this case.

Definately add an airstone! Since you pulled the prazi out already, I would also suggest a good water change.
