Preliminary to a build

For the past few months I've been hinting at a build for a 240g that I've had waiting on the sidelines for a few years. Well it's getting closer. I decided to do the FRAG tank and QT tanks first so I'd have someplace to "store" future inhabitants before they enter the 240g. That and my 150g DT is overstocked so I need some place to move the excess to.

So I've had the FRAG tank up and running for the last 2 weeks. Been playing around with where the flow pumps should go. I have 2 Koralia 1400's in it. It's a standard 55g tank. There's a HOB filter on it with Spectrapure's SpectraZorb Granular Activated Carbon and Phosphate Removal Media in it. Water has been clear as a bell.

Here are some shots of some live rock that was added to the FRAG tank today. The seller said there was some "stuff" on it. Couldn't tell us what is was. Maybe you could help ID some of it?

The first two are common button polyps. They come in brown usually or sometimes you get lucky with a actinic green coloration.

3 and 5 are just some zoas. Nothing really special. Look like Watermelon/Eagle Eyes and just some common green zoas.

Number 4 and 6 are not Monti's. They are variations of Green Star Polyps. That is that mat they use to encrust on everything so be careful to control them!

All the coral you got can spread quick so just a little heads up. Good start to start propagating with if you haven't before :)

Your unknown montis look more like star polyps to me. And as far as the palys and zoas go , unless you really like them I'd get rid of them so they don't smother more desirable frags like they did in my tank. I started with a few and said to myself " they shouldn't be too bad" now I'm losing the bases of 3-4 nice sps due to encroachment.

Thanks for the heads up on what these are. I'll keep an eye on these guys. The star polyps don't look at all like the gsp I have in the 150g. So it didn't even occur to me that they could be star polyps.

Looks great Roy!

Looks like you are getting use the new camera also!

Will the 240 be a reef? I'm getting ready to do a 135 FOWLR in the living room, something simple, easy to maintain.

As for the ID requested, I'd agree, it does look like stuff to me also...:)

Thanks Phil!

Yes, practicing a bit with the new camera. The FRAG tank is an old 55g that I had sitting around. Pretty scratched up and dingy. I cleaned it up as best I could but pics of it are never going to be great.

I'm planning on the 240g being a mixed reef. The current 150DT has a bunch of tangs and some larger than clown sized fish in it. I'm thinking I'll go with smaller fish for the 240g. Or maybe swap the larger fish for the 240g if I could catch them...
