New male spit out 12 premature babies with pretty big yolk sacks 2 days ago. The sacks today are much smaller (pictures) and I started a BBS culture and will start a new one everyday. Pretty sure this is about day 18~19. Today they have pigment that is showing more and are starting to practice their upright swimming a bit. Anyone have input on when I can introduce BBS? Should I wait until yolk sack is all gone? Thanks

Sorry for the delay....How are the babies today? I have raised premature babies too... they will survive off their yolk sac for a few days, just keep introducing the BBS, they should be fine. I raise mine in the floating nursery also. Up to 27 babies until I see aggression, then I separate them down to 7 babies per nursery. Keeping them in a floating nursery helps me ensure they are eating properly. I alwasy look for the big fat red/orange bellies, then I know they have had enough to eat. Good luck!

Sorry, I didnt think anyone replied. 4 are alive and well and eating like pigs! about the size of a dime from head to tail. Just yesterday my amazing pair of goldstripe maroons laid eggs! I have asked on another post about the hatch time for maroons with no response. Do any of you know? I will post pics of both in a bit.
Yes - I have raised GSM. 7 to 8 days depending on temp. When they eggs turn silver (eyes) they will hatch within a couple of days. Sometimes we have had them hatch over 2 days but usually it is only 1. You should see them fanning the nest heavily the night of the hatch and the hatch out may take several hours or quickly depending upon the pair.
Aggresive fanners sometimes loosen all the eggs before they are ready to hatch.
I have a pair of tomatos that dont fan at all and i have to use an air line on night 7 to get them started.
GSM fry are pretty small so I dont start feeding Otohime until about day 7 or so. They get pretty aggressive quick. We dont have much of a market for them locally so I only keep 1 - 2 batches/year.
I dont check the board often but check periodically will reply if I have something different than those posted already. Good luck, its very rewarding to see them grow.
