Premium Membership

I understand what I would receive if I were to become a Premium Member but how does the money get used that we pay for this? I'm guessing that the sponsors pay for the upkeep of the site. Is the membership fee needed for this as well? What else is it used for?

Sponsors subsidize the cost, but I strongly doubt they cover the cost of running this website. According to big-boards.com, this is the #72 largest message board on the web.

Couple of interesting statistics:
total members: 157,000 (~50 more join daily)
total posts: 10,000,000
posts last week: 45,000

The site gets about 15,000 unique visitors daily, and 400,000+ page views.

Also, unlike some other boards I've participated on, Reef Central adds storage capacity so that old threads aren't pruned. Information is preserved so you can find it in the future.

As I understand it, between sponsorship dollars and premium memberships, RC does turn a small profit.

Personally, I choose to carry a premium mebership, if for no other reason than to enjoy increased access to the search function (which I use constantly). Beyond that, I prefer to support the site because I know how much time I spend (waste) here. :D IMO, the cost is easily justified, based on the money that I save through things I've learned (and continue to learn) here. Sure, the same knowledge is available even if I don't pay. But, if we all took the freeloader attitude, the site probably loses money, suspending all future upgrades.

All excellent points! Thanks Jeff. Check for the "I support..." thing next to my name.:)

I love the search function yes it doesn't work every time but wait 30 seconds and try again and no problem. I say 90% of my searches work on first try. Also i want to support RC and for the price, the best 24/year bucks i spend on my hobby.

is that $25 monthly / yearly / or a one time fee?

The cost of premium membership is $24 per year.

First for $25 its well worth it to me to keep this site going. I've saved so much because of this site , I don't mind the $25 to give back.
This is not a non profit web site. I'd be excited if they were making good money off of it. I doubt they are but its fine with me.
Third because this isn't a charity, I don't think its my right nor do I care how much they make or how they spend it. The site is up when I need it and it works. That's only the way I feel , Take it for what it worth.
