Sponsors subsidize the cost, but I strongly doubt they cover the cost of running this website. According to big-boards.com, this is the #72 largest message board on the web.

Couple of interesting statistics:
total members: 157,000 (~50 more join daily)
total posts: 10,000,000
posts last week: 45,000
The site gets about 15,000 unique visitors daily, and 400,000+ page views.
Also, unlike some other boards I've participated on, Reef Central adds storage capacity so that old threads aren't pruned. Information is preserved so you can find it in the future.
As I understand it, between sponsorship dollars and premium memberships, RC does turn a small profit.
Personally, I choose to carry a premium mebership, if for no other reason than to enjoy increased access to the search function (which I use constantly). Beyond that, I prefer to support the site because I know how much time I spend (waste) here.

IMO, the cost is easily justified, based on the money that I save through things I've learned (and continue to learn) here. Sure, the same knowledge is available even if I don't pay. But, if we all took the freeloader attitude, the site probably loses money, suspending all future upgrades.
