preparing old sand

i set up a new tank a couple months back, and at the time i had no sand for it, but now a friend is giving me some old sand that has been dry about a year. what is the best way to clean the sand? just rinse well with r/o water? boil it?

I would just wash it outside in buckets with the water hose. Get a paint mixer drill bit for you drill and wash till the water clears up...

I wouldnt waste any ro on cleaning though...
