Hi RC,

Just bought a blue hippo tang from my LFS. Fairly small size probably 3 inches in length.

Im pretty sure it has ich. swims against a piece of my rock in the same motion looking like its trying to scratch an itch.

I have a nem, 2 bullethole clownfish.

Should i try one of the treatments mentioned above? I was thinking about the copper treatment? Will it be harmful to my other fish?

Is it too late for me to take out the tang in hopes of my entire aquarium being "infected" ??

I read the sticky on ich and.. it kind of scares the crap out of me.

All the help is welcome, some scolding and advice and name calling is as well.

Hi RC,

Not appropriate for a 30 gallon tank. P. hepatus is known to be an "ich magnet"

That is called flashing. Since ich is below the skin, it does not really solve anything

You cannot do copper with any kind of invert in the tank, and in fact any treatment is going to require a hospital tank

Unfortunately, your display tank now has ich

I read the sticky on ich and.. it kind of scares the crap out of me.

Not its intention, but people not prepared to properly eliminate and/or treat ich (or worse, other parasites) will be scared. You just have to decide how you wish to proceed, with the sticky giving you various options.

We do not scold or name call, as that accomplishes nothing. My blog has a protocol for quarantine and the sticky has four treatments for ich: tank transfer, copper, hyposalinity, and CP. So sorry for the problem, but if you wish to be successful in this hobby, you will need to become very familiar with possible parasites and their prevention.

Thanks for the help!

I definitely went immediately to all the stickies and read them.

I suppose I was lucky to run into this problem early on in my tanks setup. I could probably setup a QT.

My question is.. if I have more than 1 fish do i need more than one qt?

that depends on the size of fish, size of QT, and fish compatibility..

if you have lots of fish, and plan to do tank transfer method. You can save some money by using home depot buckets for transfer (small fish). Then put them in a larger glass tank for monitoring period.
