Price for GSP?

My LFS just got a piece of rock with some GSP on it this week. It's about 2.5 x 3.5 inches and looks ok. They have it listed for 53.99 US$ which I am thinking is quite over priced, especially since GSP can grow so quickly.

What are your thoughts?

There is also a Candy cane frag that they have listed for 29.99 which is decent sized, probably 3-4 heads and about 3 inches in diameter. I think I'll start with the candy cane for now.

Agreed nothing special here, GSP is like a weed can get out of control and overgrow the tank if you do not stay on top of it!

Bummer. I really like GSP. I don't even have corals at all, but I'm still not stupid enough to pay that much for something that I'll be pulling out of my tank in a few months by the handful. Frustrating.

Total rip. Mine grows like a weed and I just give it away. People that do sell around here sell that size frag for 5 dollars

Yup, I would pass. I had some GSP that was electric green and maybe it would command a small premium (say $10-15 for a good sized frag). I think I got $5-10 credit at the LFS. I got rid of it because I didn't want it to take over my tank.

Same is true for the candy cane coral, under good conditions they can grow extremely fast.
This one on the right, grew out in just over a year from about 15 polyps. I ended up giving the colony away and kept 3 polyps for my "Green tank" and it's already up to 20 polyps in about 4 months.

Wow^^ , that's amazing.

It's funny... everyone is telling me that GSP, and Xenia will over take your tank and it will be such a nuisance, but I am so nervous about my first coral I am attracted to them because I want them to grow... you know? Lol.

That candy cane is awesome! What's your secret?

We give GSP away at the shop to people just starting out with coral and tell them to keep an eye on it so it doesnt take over their tank. If you have a local frag club I would suggest joining; you'll meet some very knowledgeable people who will help you out.

Wow, I need to get into the GSP business in North Dakota.
If you can make a trip down to Colorado I'll GIVE you enough GSP to coat your entire tank.

Thing is GSP is actually surprisingly expensive when your LFS buys it wholesale, they're marking it up a pretty standard amount it just sucks that they're stuck with it. If locals start bringing in frags for trade-in they'd probably love it, chances are they just got it because no one offers :)

I can't keep GSP or candy canes alive. I also have trouble with zenia. My leathers, mushrooms, and cloves do fine....I don't get it. I feed everything.

GSP is a very fast grower. It can be nuisance. But if u keep on eyes and trim them once they over take a rock with other corals. Candy cane is a nice coral. Not a lot people like it but some people does. One of my starter corals. Yea $59 for a GSP is way to much. U can get them free in forum. And the candy cane is kinda high price for it too. Got my first candy cane for $18.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to skip that GSP, but for what I have available around here, I'll probably take the Candy cane. If I can get some GSP for cheap from somewhere else maybe I'll be able to frag some for them and they can sell it cheaper.

My LFS sells GSP frags that size for $15 and will throw it in free if you're buying other corals. From our reef club I can get it free or less than $5. Candy Canes here run about $20-$25 a frag in the LFS, $5 or so from fellow reefers.

Unless it is a crazy odd shaped piece, leave the GSP alone, find a local reefer and do a trade for it. $10 a head for candy cane is about right, some of the 'more cool' ones might be higher. They grow fast in good conditions, and you should be able to frag the candy cane for a trade in a few months.
