Price of Hammers?

I am looking at some hammers from a local hobbyist. He wanted $80 for the hammers and I think the frogspawn is the same price. I would get the whole piece of hammer. Are they rare for them to cost this much? I think the hammer is by the size of a fist and I would get the whole block of light purple hammer in the top left for $80. Is this reasonable?

prices vary throughout the country. in my area I $80 would be a bit steep. If you love it buy it if not I'm sure you will find something just as nice down the road.
 
Interesting question, Is it goes in this hobby, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Pricing is all relative with corals, compared to spending $20 for a single zooanthid polyp it is good value.
It is a very nice looking coral, both for size and coloration.

That price seems high to me. I can buy a similar specimen for $40-$60 in Canada no less. BTW I suspect that hammer coral looks beige in full spectrum light.
 
Ya.. That looks like a plain brown hammer to me, but you can't tell from picture only I suppose. I'd pay $80 for the green one.
 
He showed me that hammer under full spectrum light and its very light purple. Its not all that colorful, but I just thought $80 is a lot of money for a hammer. I would rather get the more purple colored hammer at the bottom of the pic or the ultra neon tipped frogspawn for that price.
 
I think my LFS is even more expensive than DD and I dont get a guarantee. The selection at my LFS is very limited as well.

DD seems like they just recently up their prices about 20%.

Looks like about 4". 80 is a good price IMO.
 
We sell hammers and frogspawns that size for as much as 150. Down here any euphyllia is pretty high. I just sold a six head torch today for 45. So I would take it. Definitely the frogspawn though, much nicer color
 
Terrance, I'm not an expert, but I'm in the same general area of the country as you are, and I was just at the LFS today....they had pieces of hammer and frogspawn about like that size wise that were mostly about $60. There were some in the $80-90 range that were unusually colored or a different species I suppose.

The frogspawn in the upper right looks bigger and I think $80 would be about what it would have been at the LFS.
 
That price sounds fair. I paid probably $130 ish for a slightly smaller orange hammer & it still looks orange under 10k pc. My purpler frogspawn is looks a less purple under those lights but it still is pretty. The pieces I bought are comparable to what you can find on DD but one of my customers is a wholesaler & he hooked me up with the LFS & hand picked my frogspawn. Some days being a Customs broker has it's perks :)
 
Sounds about right to me. I paid about $120 for a two head Aussie Purple Hammer awhile back. I think it was listed for $150, but I had a coupon.
 
I agree with SGD. I'm in Clevland and that's a fair price for a hammer that size. In fact, if I saw a purple one like that I'd jump on it for $80
