Pricing for used tanks / CL

just out of curiosity what we be the expected $/gal estimate on a used tank? I've got all that I need but I ask because I'm constantly on Craigslist searching around for aquarium related items. In my searches I'm constantly seeing 55 gal tanks for 150-250$. Then 150 gallon tanks for 700-900$. These are just the tanks of course.

Like I said, I've got more tanks than needed. But wow! I hope there isn't some fella out there buying these things.

Well at petco until next week you can get a 55 gallon for $55 bucks. Anything 55 and under I would get at petco when they do the sales unless it is an all in one.

I've got what I need but I agree! It's mad how much money some people want for these tanks. But then again I'm assuming people get out of wanting fish in general and try to recoperate most of their money invested. My wife attempted to have me sell my equipment, after I told her what is get versus what I paid she quickly recanted her request!

i learned a long time ago that a tank depreciates like a car. The minute it leaves the store, it is used and it's true value plummets. Some people disagree.

Some of the asking prices on CL are outrageous. If I find something that catches my eye, I'll usually contact the seller and make them an offer on what I think the value is and see what they say. Some answer back with the usual CL attitude of "GIVE ME MY MONEY", but every once in a while there are people willing to negotiate.

In my opinion, a used tank in good condition is worth about 30-40% of a new tank. Anything 55 gallons or under isn't even worth getting used because they are so cheap new at the dollar per gallon sale. It'd have to be an extremely unusual circumstance for me to pay any more than that. You can never recoup your value out of these things :/

IME, used tanks can usually be bought for $1-2 gallon...slightly more for RR, starphire, acrylic, all in ones, rimless, large tanks... obviously age/condition/scratches affect the value

If a person selling thinks it is worth a certain amount and you think it should be lower just say no thanks and keep looking.I have had people argue with me and tell me I will never sell for the price I'm asking,99% of the time I get around my price.

It has its ups and downs I suppose. But like you said Spin, it's out there for other to agree and disagree. Have to say its a good resource though. Learned the hard way to not meet someone at your house to complete Craigslist deals. There are some sketchballs out there! My 80lb pitbull has scared more than 1 away!

I e bad some very good experiences and met some great people through Craigslist deals. But there's always that 1 that is odd. I've since started doing the same, meeting at a public place.

I agree often times WAYYYYYY overpriced but i just always assumed that they must have had the tank dipped in gold before posting it ;) same even goes for corals often people ask way to much for what they actually have but there are deals out there
