If you have a controller put a switch above your display water level to shut off and a low in the sump to shut off.

Just to clarify, I don't think your box lost siphon. I think your drain got clogged. The siphon kept pulling water, which fell out the back of your box. A sensor in the tank wouldn't have stopped this. Maybe a sensor in the back box though.

That's what I think too. I think all I can do is keep a better watch on the drain and get one of those water alarms, which I ordered from Amazon today.

Yeah, possibly some mesh (not sponge) material over the inlet- keep snails and such out.

you could look into redisgning your sump with a baffle on the return pump thats smaller, so that if this happens again it will pump a smaller amount of water before going dry there for not overflowing your dt or the overflow box on the dt. or the controller thing that was previosly stated sounds like it would work if it would shut your pump off early, before it pumped itself dry therefor pumping less water to dt and not allowing it to overflow.
