problem with alkalinity

hey, i have been having a constant battle with getting my alkalinity level up. I tested it about a week ago with the salifert kit, and it gave me a reading of about 6.0 dkh. So, over the last 5 days or so, i have slowly been adding two different buffers to try to raise it... the B-Ionic part 1 alkalinity component, and the seachem reef buffer. well, i tested it two days ago and it only read about 6.7 dkh, and today, it is reading 6.4 dkh. What gives? i added the suggested buffer amount over the 5 days as calculated on the calcium and alkalinity calculator. calcium is good, about 470 ppm. I need some suggestions! thanks all in advance.... im lost!

Ok I hope that you have a good test kit and not a bad one. first I would get a new test kit to make sure that there really is a problem. 2nd use both part 1 and part 2 of b-ionic so that it will work properally. What is your PH at?

A tank can very easily use 2 dKh per day. When you get down around the 6 dKh level it slows/stops calcification and thus it may just bottom out there and not continue to lower,,,, much anyway. You are probably only adding your daily alk consumption/usage and thereby not actually raising it much. Use this calculator to see how much of the various product you need to add. Ignore everything about how much to add that is on the package.

thanks for the replys....
i know the test kit is good because i have used it in the past and it has been accurate. ph is normal, about 8.2.

DrBDC. thats the calculator i used... but i was unaware that a system could use so much alk so quickly.... i guess i will just keep adding the daily amount i was...or maybe a little more...

Also if its getting pricey, I would just use Arm & Hammer baking soda mixed in fresh water. The same calculator will tell you how much. Then once you get balance, go back to the 2-part. :)
