Problem with new Tunze 6105

Hello,

I just received two tunze 6105 powerheads today. One of them is working great and quiet. The other is stopping and starting on its own. Its like it has a mind of its own. They are not connected to any controller, I ordered the 7096 but it is on back order.

It would run for few seconds to 30 seconds max.. and then it would stop and start again and stop and start again.. when it starts, it makes a loud noise that I can hear clearly. I exchanged the power adapter and the problem is still there. Do you have any idea what is wrong with it? What can I do? is there anyway I can replace it with a new one?

Hi Bao, we should be able to get this figured out quickly. The first thing to do would be to check that there's no foreign debris inside the pump, near the impeller or in the hole where the impeller sits. Though it's very uncommon it is possible that some packaging material made its way in there.

Also please check that the potentiometer on the junction box is turned fully clockwise. Here's a picture of the junction box and potentiometer (red knob):

Hi Craig,

I am not home to check on the impeller but I did turned the knob all the way up and all the way down, it doesn't make much different. I also changed out all the jumper but still no different.

Regarding the impeller, It is just the simple impeller and we put the impeller into the hole with the metal needle stick out right? There is no more extra pieces like rubber ring or anything else?

Yes, that's pretty much it. At the bottom of the shaft there should be a small blue attenuation disc. You'll probably need to shine a light down there to see it. The black part sits on top of and inside the blue rubber part and they should be in place sitting at the bottom of the shaft.

Also check that the power connection is not real loose, if it slips out easily, this can be adjusted and could be the problem. Please let us know if the problem continues and we can exchange the motor.

The pin in the receptacle for the power on the little black connector box is forked, it has a split in the middle. Use a small jewelers screwdriver and insert it into the split to spread it just a little.

I don't see a pin. Do you have a diagram?

Thx Roger I got them working again. I had to cut off a little of the black plastic surrounding the bigger plug and in the smaller one I was able to open the screw a little bit. Seems to be a much better fit. Why do they come so loose from factory? Also my impellers have been freezing up a lot lately.

They should not come loose, this issue has to do with the plastic molding process, if the plastic cools at a certain rate it contracts and the tabs pull inward and don't lock as tight as they should, it is easily remedied by bowing them back out, at least in the past this was checked in assembly and corrected as needed. Quite possibly they changed the process assuming it was solved in molding, I will check on it.

If the impellers are freezing up, usually the cause will be higher calcium, KH or pH levels, dosing Calcium or buffer near the pumps or not getting the pump completely clean when cleaning it. It is necessary to remove the impeller assembly to get the shaft and the hole in the impeller clean, this is the main area that will sieze.
