Problem with Sailfin tang's gills.

There is something wrong with my sailfin tang's gills. for the past 2 days, when the tang turns around I can see the red inside it's gill like they are sticking out more then normal. It also breathes heavy.. like 2-3 inhales per second. It's eating normal, swimming normal, just something new about it thats concerning me. Water test are perfectly fine, ammonia, nitrite,nitrate: 0, SG: 1.023, temp is a little low this morning at 74 due to over night climate change but usually stays around 76. I just turned up the heater. Weekly WCs.

The sailfin was a recuse from petco.. I thought it would fit in a 125 gallon but apparently I was wrong and I don't plan on keeping it when it grows out of the tank. Its aprox around 2-3 inches in length and in a 3 foot 30 gallon at the momment until a proper hospitel tank is up and running. I had the fish for 6 months.. maybe longer.

My one scooter blenny also seems a bit sluggish the past few days.. I'm going to relocate it into another tank incase it ran out of pods and everybody is out competing the mysis. It's been staying still in the same spot for the past 2 days.. it will relocate slightly when something bothers it (Like a hermit crab, snail, the other scooter blenny, etc..)

I take it the Sailfin tang was in the main with the scooter Blenny? Was the tang quarantined before intro into the main? Are you seeing any spots or scratching?

No spots or scratching at all. I'm going to treat everything in a HT whenever I get my 125 gallon cycling soon. Yes, currently all in a 30 gallon.. I just relocated the scooter into my ten gallon rich in pods and I don't think it's going to make it.. my bumblebee snails are on it

Why do you keep buying fish from an unreputable place? You can't save all of them. Purchasing them shows the store that their husbandry practices are "acceptable" so they never have incentive to change.

What happened to the other tang that was stuffed into a 10 gallon tank? Are you treating all these new arrivals? Is there really a 125 gallon in the works?

I agree alot with purchasing from them just influences business but its hard for me to walk by, that and the tang was rather heathly when I got it, the scooter blennies I got from them also because they were starving with no food source whatsoever. I haven't got anything from them for awhile now, I'm finished and sticking with my good LFS sad to say even their fish looked ill last trip.. Yes there is really a 125 in the works.. I'm still waiting on earning enough to pay for LR. The addition to the house is almost done so I'll be able to get it filled up with water and some sand in a few weeks.

The YT is doing fine! I managed to get rid of it's internal parasites and it's happily grazing in there. I do need to hurry with this 125 however because the bio-load is the primary issue here in the 10 gallon.. I'm getting a rubbermaid 20 or 30 g container to treat everybody whenever I begin cycling the 125.

Without the knowledge at the time of getting them.. no I didn't know any better to treat them, thats why I'm currently focusing on getting some sort of HT up and running soon. But it's little distractions like this that put me behind in getting the bigger tank up and I can't treat the one they are currently in. Unless you know some sort of non-toxic invert safe meds. I plan on giving away the sailfin in the future anyway since a 125 gallon isn't big enough for a full grown sailfin, but I'd like it to live until that day healthy meanwhile and I'm afraid that in it's current state more stress moving will finish it off.

Next time I go to the LFS I'm going to get my water tested and match up their test to mine. I'm also going to get a better test kit brand, I currently just got an API chemical test kit.

Ditch the API and get some more reliable kits- Salifert or Elos maybe? What does your LFS carry?

Not sure, If they don't have either I'll probably have to order it online. All I know is they always point at the Saltwater master test kit when I go there for refills.. not the best lfs to say the least.

The sailfin seems better this morning.. it's not breathing as hard and the redness in it's gills looks darker.. still sticking out slightly.

Alright! I'm picking up the final peices of equiptment for the 125 wednsday. I'm going to use my empty 29 gallon to treat them all.

I bought 1 bottle of coppersafe, will this be enough? Should I add something else to get rid of the copper first (to prevent risk of tracing any in the DT full of sps and inverts), or is this good enough? I can pick up a different med wednsday if it is no good.

Both tangs actually look healthier since I got them before even treating.
The yellow lost it's internal parasites sticking out of it and is grazing in the ten like no tomorrow (good, my GHA is gone now :thumbsup.

The sailfin also appears completely normal now.. he/she is breathing proper and the gills are no longer swollen. I'm actually pretty shocked how well everybody is doing with their living conditions.. their recovering without me even doing anything! :crazy1:
