Since i just started buying a few small frags im checking my alk, mag, cal daily. When i frist started testing my mag was 1100 and alk was a little on the low side. So i added some more mag to the tank and it didnt raise it much so i added some alk. Then i checked my mag this afternoon and it went up to the higher levels, then i checked my mag and it went down to about 900??? can anyone help me out on what i did wrong, my cal has always been around 500. I new at keeping sps so im trying very hard.

magnesium and alkalinity compete for space in the aquarium. when you add more magnesium you are taking up space that alkalinity would take up. if you have a high alkalinity you will more likely then not have a low magnesium. hope that helps.

Mag shouldn't fluctuate that quickly, perhaps there was testing errors? It does take quite a bit of the mag chloride/sulfate solution to raise it. I would retest with a good kit and increase by no more than 100ppm a day.
