Problems getting sun coral to open

Stumped

New member
I bought a new sun coral colony (very healthy, tissue between all the heads, etc.) and I'm having some difficulty getting it to open. I've been using the 'bucket feeding' method with mysis and minced shrimp to no avail. I've used this method on a sun coral before it opened up after 2-3 times of doing it. I've had this one for over a week and it will inflate, but not put out polyps.

It's inflating regularly in the tank, but not putting out polyps there either. I'm use a turkey baster to target feed it in the tank in addition to the bucket feeding. Any suggestions? Oddly enough it has baby polyps (smaller than the size of a pencil eraser) that are pretty much open 24/7. I'm guessing I'm just overreacting and a week+ isn't anything to worry about.

My sun coral wouldn't open for a week at a time here and there if it wasn't fed daily. Did you ever try the 2 liter bottle trick so you don't have to take it out of the tank?

Give it more flow. That will sometimes pop them open.

Thanks, I moved it slightly closer to the flow of my MP40 and it has opened up fully. Glad I asked, because that was the last thing I thought it would be (seeing as it was already getting quite a lot of flow where I had originally placed it).

i have mine about 6" from the powerhead , just out of the halide light and it stays open most of the time , once and a while when the lights come on it closes for a few ... but i never target feed it ??
