proper way to deal with these

well Ive noticed a few very obvious occurances of macro algae in my tank

is this something I can just rip off the rock or is it like a weed in a garden where if you dont get the root it'll just grow back

should I attempt to get a crab/snail to consume it?

also, what the hell are these things...they look like those normal white tube things, but they are green instead...option 2: they are the normal things and the green is algae growing on them

any ideas?

I'm guessing that the first would be feather caluerpa.

I don't think you'll find a snail or crab that will take care of it for you and you are correct in thinking that the roots and all need to be gotten rid of. Some tangs eat it and possibly some rabbitfish but I believe it's a hit and miss type of thing.

The second is hard to say too.

It COULD possibly be Neomeris. That is a calcareous macroalgae. Most folks don't seem to have a problem with it but I THINK that is what scbadiver is plagued with.

The first is feather caulerpa. The second one cap may be right on the name but it's also in this months reefkeeping mag.

second one is called Spindle Weed. It is a calcerous (sp?) algae. I had some and I wanted them to stay but a snail bowled them over and they never came back. If you don't want them breaking them off usually will remove them I have heard.

my tank is far too small to get a tang or rabbit, so I'll try to remove the feather manually...its confined to one rock (but I can tell it has pretty aggressive roots)

I also have another macro that looks kind of like a lichen or something like that...it has small round leaves and doesnt grow upward but kind of like a mat

just keep pruning the caulepa, try to get the roots. i used to have it now it's gone.

Get rid of the stalks of Neomeris Annulata, aka "green penis weed"!!! I Letmegrow is absolutely right. That is the stuff that plagued my tank to the pont of draining it. However, The first 12 years with that rock I had no problems with it, I just got lucky. Still I'd recommend to pull of out. It serves no purpose, nothing eats it and it as the potential for problems.
