proposal for an Educational officer.

Next year I think it would be good to have a position created for an Ed. Officer. I would like your input on whether you think:

a) this is a good idea or not, and

b) what you would like to see this person doing for the club.

Once we get a set of perceived roles sorted out we can look for a person to perform the tasks.

So.......

Please share your thoughts.
 
I think creating this position would be a great way to get someone else involved in club planning.

This person could:
1. schedule meeting sites
2. take suggestions for meeting topics
3. schedule speakers or videos for presentations
4. review and incorporate feedback

Just my thoughts.

and that is an educating in what way?

i would think an educational officer would be for giving there thoughts or opinions on how to set up and maintain tanks

seem like those would be more of the presidents responsabilty

my thoughts on an educational officer. which i think could and would be a good thing for the club

one that knows and would be willing to give there opinons and time to the diffrent systems club members are trying to maintain/achieve

the diffrent lights for diffrent tank set ups,the diffrent filtration for diffrent tank systems,fish loads for tank sizes,algae control and the diffrent ways to deal with it,aptasia control, breeding fish and propagating corals....etc....etc....
...its never ending!!!!

i would think an educational officer would spend there time trying to educate ......not organize......maybee the club needs an organizational officer position too? but IMO that is more of the presidents duty

I think I alread do all that.

My thoughts are more along the lines of new information, or organizing specific talks on a subject.
 
fwiw, I think this position should be held by someone who keeps up with current events in the hobby along with the new technology and techniques that come out. That could go a long way towards helping to educate the rest of us. could also help to organize more of the DIY mettings like we had with the 10g refugium, that bit of info changed this hobby completely for me, Not to mention helped saved money, who would't want that?
 
Thats what I was hoping for Adam, someone to help keep the club up to date on new and interesting things, as well work on developing talks/workshops/demonstrations.
 
I think all of the above have been great points. I couldn't see what to add to it that would step on other position's toes. But, the general ideas are still pretty vague. I guess first, COMAS as a whole needs to take what has been mentioned, find a few new ideas if possible, and then narrow it down a little more detailed and put it down on paper.
 
Yeah, I don't think that an educational officer would be someone who was the reefkeeping expert that offered advice to people. I think that would be the position of all COMAS members. I have never met ANYONE who knew all the answers to keeping saltwater tanks. I think that the educational officer should be in charge of keeping us as a group informed. More learning opportunities, confrerences, speakers, someone to keep the references and media to check out. And maybe even have a good idea of what most of the books/movies are about, so that if someone needs some information about, say breeding bangaii's, the officer could check out the appropriate book to them. Of course, answering questions is not a bad thing, but I don't think that should be the focus of the position.

the Ed officer is an organizational position to promote educational programs. These can include suggested people to assist in mentoring for example. The scheduling of guest speakers. Obtaining information on new products. however...the general idea is to help increase the knowledgebase of the club.

They wouldnt necessarily be the person who preents everything, but the person that begs, cajoles, bribes or otherwise threatens people to get them to give a presentation. Beg and bribe would be the preferred methods.
 
I would also like to see the establishment of a Social officer. Same kind of idea as Ed officer but they would plan events with a more social aspect. The EO (ed officer) brings people in. The SO (Soc officer) arranges for us to go visit.

If each officer organized two or three events per year that would be 6 events. The SO type deals would be along lines of organizing behind scenes at the zoo, or jenks or Dallas world Aq...or any other such idea they may conceive. Maybe a club cookout that kind of deal.
 
That is a great idea. Our OKAA club has had cookouts with Native Fish Collecting Trips but that is something we can't do here unless we move the coastline or take a 9 hour trip to the Gulf.

The Dallas World Aquarium is worth the trip. I think these are wonderful ideas.
 
I can probably work on a tour of the DWA, being down here and all. I also know someone who knows some of the folks from there. I think I can get us in.
