Proposed ban on 82 Stony Corals...oye

Just another example of idiocy at the legislative level. This is why they get the big bucks, free healthcare, pension, etc etc.

My interpretation of this is that a group, (in this case, the Center for Biological Diversity), has petitioned NOAA and NMFS to classify these 82 species as endangered or threatened. However, here's where the wheels will fall off (IMO):
As a result of this finding, we are commencing status reviews on
all of the petitioned species (except O. varicosa) to determine whether
listing any of these coral species under the ESA is in fact warranted.
We intend that any final action resulting from these reviews be as
accurate and as effective as possible, and consider the best available
scientific and commercial information. Therefore, we open a 60-day
public comment period to solicit information from the public,
government agencies, the scientific community, industry, and any other
interested parties on the status of these 82 coral species throughout
their range, including:
(1) Historical and current distribution and abundance of these
species throughout their ranges (U.S. and foreign waters);
(2) historic and current condition of these species and their
habitat;
(3) population density and trends;
(4) the effects of climate change on the distribution and condition
of these coral species and other organisms in coral reef ecosystems
over the short- and long-term;
(5) the effects of other threats including dredging, coastal
development, coastal point source pollution, agricultural and land use
practices, disease, predation, reef fishing, aquarium trade, physical
damage from boats and anchors, marine debris, and aquatic invasive
species on the distribution and abundance of these coral species over
the short- and long-term; and
(6) management programs for conservation of these coral species,
including mitigation measures related to any of the threats listed
under (5) above.
We will base our findings on a review of the best scientific and
commercial information available, including all information received
during the public comment period.

It will be interesting to see how things play out, but this isn't the first (nor will it be the last) attempt of this nature.

This isn't anything new and TBH I wouldn't lose sleep over it... they aren't getting into my tank, that's for sure! :uzi:

yeah, Cali, don't they have an attack anenome or something? a guard fish? i'll just have them hand feed the lion fish.

hehe for sure there..But I'm waiting for the day when the coppers knock on my door with a warrant to search the house for growing pot after several reports from neighbors that very bright lights run in the house all the time lol :wildone:

mointipora digitata is endangered?!

All coral is endangered. The real question is how to address it. Science still has not found the root cause. Global warming (?) is based on economics, not science, so please don't go there. The real answer is always found if you follow the money.

Chris(acidraindrops) was being sarcastic, due to the speed at which montipora digitata can grow...

i knew there was more that one reason i liked you....this is why I like having contacts at the Marine Institute in Oregon....i don't like to get into discussions where politics is at the root...however, if there is a way to tax and/or increase the price on anything here in the United States, it will be done. Sadly, once the media gets a hold of this information? It will become fact...and then you can bet that more and more of us will be finding ways to ascertain coral in another manner. Sean at the Institute says that where talks are just beginning on this, he is already seeing where this is going in the way of taxing marine cultured and aquacultured coral. For anyone that is is the business of actually PROMOTING the continued existence of coral, they will be taxed and/or fined for doing so. That's what happens when government is given too much control. Just my two cents.

It was apparent he was using sarcasm.
I was suggesting in my own way that even with the apparent prolific nature of Monti-dig, it's still doomed in nature. Moneymongers are simply exploiting us as always.

I would think if they are endangered FEDs would endorse propagation?

Someone is trying to make up their budget gap

THANK YOU!!! It's one BIG scam for international bankers to succle away your money.

You sir, know your stuff!

I posted this same article a few months ago. If the worlds coral reefs do by chance happen to all crap out, then for the sake of science we should be encouraged to keep our corals in the same manner that zoos have a captive breeding program for other endangered species.

I think you are right..This is all a plot hatched by Al Gore and his minions..Phase 1 was Al's..as we all know he invented the internet..

phase 2 is to spread global warming propaganda( we see tons of this now)

phase 3...god only knows what that evil man has in store for us..maybe horse and buggies again,everyone one must swear off meat and maybe we will have to move back into caves because god help you if you chop a tree down to build a house.. :hmm2:

Horse and buggies again wouldn't hurt my feelings. I don't want to discuss our well made American autos right about now. lol
