I have been having a bit of a problem in my 5g pico with zoas and amphipods... I recently lost a huge colony of radioactive dragon eye zoas to some large amphipods. I did a lot of asking on another forum and everyone suggested it was a water issue resulting in the zoas death and the amphipods were simply scavenging. All of my other corals were fine, even other zoas, so I chalked it up to unhappy zoas which led to their ultimate demise and the amphipods were simply cleaning up... That is until yesterday.
I was cleaning the room where my 5g tank resides, and all my corals were doing great. I have 2 sets of zoas, a cluster of watermelons and a cluster of punk rockers. When I started cleaning, I took a look at the tank and everyone was open and happy. About 15-20 minutes later, out of the corner of my eye I noticed that the bright orange of the punk rockers wasn't visible. Sure enough, they were pulled in and there were 2 large amphipods climbing around them. I wasn't alarmed as this has happened before and the zoas just get angry. I checked on them a half hour later and not only had they not opened up, but the 2 amphipods were near the major polyp that spawned the others. That one had no more orange tendrils, and it's mouth was stretched upwards and the rest of the poly sagging down, making it look like a mushroom. I tried to turkey baste away the amphipods to no avail.
What can I do? I'm upgrading to a 10g AIO shortly (tank is cycling, etc.).
