protein skimme and external pump help.

I am upgrading to a 20" x 9" x 16" refugium tomorrow. I'd like to get a extrenal protien skimmer to leave more room in the sump and I want to replace my pump. The pump is at least 6 years old. Please advise! Oh my tank is a 54 gallon bow(that's why the sump/refugium is so small it used to be 14" x 7" x 12" ) I can't figure out the correct GPH for my tank in regards to the pump and skimmer.

Yea...I'm gonna have to say I have no clue what you are talking about. :lol: I bought the tank from a friend a few years back and never had to purchase anything new in regards to the filteration area. Please fogive my ignorance it is not intentional.

A good start would be figuring out the head pressure to pick the right pump. How far from where the pump is placed under the tank to the top of the tank? How many right angles are in the plumbing on the return?

Do you have built in overflow or using a box?

I have a built in over flow which has something liek 2 gallon capacity. there will be like 2 angles (when I am done hopefully) and it goes approx 4.5 ft up.

Someone here at RC told me that there is a link on RC's homepage that will take you to a page that will give the flowrate at different heads for all sorts of pumps. Might wanna check that out too.

Well, a lot of talk about specs, but no recommendations on a skimmer.
I have a 65 gl, and at the recommendation of my LFS, I picked up a Precision Marine ES100. It can be run internal or external - I run mine external. I run a waste collector, which I really recommend. If the collector fills, it effectively shuts down the skimmer, so you don't have to worry about overflow.
Since I pull from the sump and return to the sump, I run a Mag 9.5 to power the skimmer. I also use a 9.5 to return from sump to tank.

I've tried other skimmers, and am very happy with this one. If there's one thing I've learned in my 1 year experience (yes, I'm still an newbie) is that if you buy Cheap, you get Cheap. Spend a couple of bucks more for quality, and you'll be happy. For not knowing what I'm doing, I have to say that I've had no problems with my tank (Knock on wood).
I read these forums a lot, and ask a ton of questions.

I've got an Aqua C EV150 skimmer, that can be used internal or external to the sump that i've been thinking about selling. It was replaced by the EV180 (same footprint & rating, but taller) which Marine Depot sells for, I believe $389 with a mag 7 pump. I would sell this one for 175 with a 4 month old mag 7 pump if you would be interested.
